i have found why the spark angle on the log is different to that of the ignition table. the Coolant temp vs MAP ign adjust was adding 8 deg of timing. but the MAT ign retard wqs taking 1 deg out.
school boy error. This means I will have to add 7 deg to the ign table. I have changed my ignition table. old and new are shown. old is on the right hand side.
compared to other ignition maps how do they look?

It looks OK to me just use headphones to listen for knock. I agree 480 on this turbo would be absolutely fine and with a few tweaks a bit better. It strikes me though that torque is coming in late. Do u use 7A cams?
In addition, looking at the log it doesnt make sense why you have a spark angle of 17 when your map asks for 9?
i may be looking at an older version of vemstune but i dont remember ever having a coolant temp vs ignition timing to ADD timing to a map. There is the MAT vs ignition retart table which is manifold temperature... but the tables there make sense but the addition of the timing in my mind doesnt.
maybe its late...Last edited by A80Avant; 1 July 2014, 21:26.Comment

Hi vas.
I have only seen this on the newest version of vems tune. Im running 1.2.23 firmware. I assume this coolant ignition map table is to retard timing for overheating or speed up warm up time on cold start. I don't know. I was told to set the table to 0. Which i did but i must have loaded a config that i had before i set it to 0. It was adding 8 deg when the coolant temp was above 60. And retarding 12 deg below coolant temp of 60. Anyway i will set it to 0 and update the ignition map as shown above.
I am running standard 3b cams. When would you expect to see peak torque?Comment

HX35 is meant to be able to have full boost on 3d gear by 4000 rpm or sooner. If your runs were done with 4th or above and you have 2.2bar after 4000 rpm I'd say either the turbo is not as previously said to be or your boost settings could need a tweak or you could have a boos leak somewhere and that can also explain partially the over fuelling if it's not VE table relatedComment

HX35 is just an umbrella designation for many different turbos. It can spool at 3.8k or spool at 4.5k, same as there are many different sized K27 hybrids.Comment

Here in Finland all HX35's have specific names like 35W, 35W Pro, 35W hybrid, 35 II, 35 FullRace, 35 Pro, 35 Super, 35/40 etc. But I'll guess in other parts of the world it isn't so simpple.
Like the yankees when they mix up horse power, ponies and wheel horse power.

Attached is a log of a 3rd gear pull up the road. i have the boost tapering to 1.9 bar @ 7 K rpm in this log. i will probably taper to 2 bar in he future from 6.5K as peak power is reached at 6K before the engine starts to choke.Attached FilesComment

Goodie,
A few things:
Can you copy the time vs. rpm data into an Excel file?
Road was flat?
Do you know the approximate weight of the car (including driver (and passneger, if any))?
Tyre size?1995 RS2 on Alcohol (6.8sec 100-200km/h)

attached is the excel file for the log. are you using a virtual dyno for this?
weight ect is stated in the excel file.
I have VDR but cant get it to work. when I paste the data t the graph goes blank.
anyway the road I guess was very slightly uphill. you would say it was flat unless you took allot of notice.
I will get some more on a very flat road with more boost at the top end.

Sorry, forgot all about this....
Here is your Virtual Dyno power and torque graph with power measured at the wheels.
NB: I ssume that you have the standard ARV 5 speed gearbox with 4.11 final drive and 1.22 3rd gear ratio?
(that is, by the way, essentially the same ratio as the B5 S4s, so your FATS time of 3.44s (4200-6500rpm in r3d) is very comparable with those. The S2 is quite a bit lighter, though.

The VEMS data was in a funky format that didn't show in the Excel file, I had a suspicion, so I copied it into Word and saw that it was nonstandard. Copied back to Excel and got it into standard format.
I had to run a heavy smoothing factor (12) in order to get a smooth curve, since the graphs were ocillating wildly at low smoothing, something that is weird with the fantastic 20hz resolution of the VEMS log (vagcom is 2-3hz in comparison)
Your 3rd gear, at 1.22 ratio is approx 8% longer than the 6 speeds in the ABY S2 and RS2 (1.323rd) in addition, the 235/40-18 is slightly bigger than the common 225/45-17, so your 3rd gear total gearing is approx 9% longer than for example mine. My test weight including driver is normally 1600-1620kg including driver, though.
With the longer ARV 3rd tested on the road it is pretty representable vs a typical ABY/ADU 4th gear pull on a dyno adjusted to a road like sweep rate.
For easy comparison, here is your Dyno Dynamics dyno graph with estimated crank numbers:
