Its the pin hole destructors that worry me.

Ive run the GTX3071r in my ABY and wasn't happy with it at all (.82 A/R). I'm sure it would make great power but lag was unacceptable. Coupled with a wagner evo exhaust manifold I wasn't making full boost until way past 4krpm. Iv had mine modified by Craig at TDI turbos. The anti-surge housing has been replaced with a modified stock 50AR compressor cover and 7 blade billet compressor wheel. Its now transformed the power delivery.
Moral of the story, bigger isn't always better.Comment

Did you actually have the 12 fin blade changed for a 7 pin? Are you sure you had a GTX and not just the GT3071?Ive run the GTX3071r in my ABY and wasn't happy with it at all (.82 A/R). If what you say is true then I'm sorry to say that you probably ruined a perfectly nice turbo and paid a whole bunch to downgrade it as well. All you needed was the 0.63ar rather than the 0.82 and you could have a much better response at the expense of a bit of a surge on higher gears when pulling hard from low revs.
To get a urge very well designed billet wheel of a GTX and fit a 7 blade billet which you can pick up from eBay is no improvement.
I hope you actually have the facts wrong on this one. Besides more than 4000 rpm lag on the 3071 is likely that other factors have played in as well.Comment

Gary sure but your turbo is nowhere near what the ask of this thread is. Old school turbos are fine no doubt about that but they just won't be able to do some of the things of the newer ones and at the same time the newer ones don't get rebuilt.
I for one have used so far 2 journal bearing and 2 BB turbos and none broke down because they were used as they should have done and everything was checked prior to installation.Comment

The issue was mostly the anti-surge housing I gatherDid you actually have the 12 fin blade changed for a 7 pin? Are you sure you had a GTX and not just the GT3071?

In my opinion the Garrett GTX turbochargers fits not very well on the engine characteristic of our 5 cylinder.
If you take a look at the compressor map: high pressure ratio, but the wide of the map isn`t as good.
Note: billet compressor wheels must not be better than casted wheels. The most important thing is the geometry!
Modern BorgWarner Turbo System (KKK) compressor wheels are better than the GTX wheels.
My turbocharger is an old KKK K27.2 (turbine + core assembly + turbine housing) combined with a modern casted compressor wheel from BW.
Not as cheap as the Garrett -> but the performance is better

I also think BB turbo´s aren´t too bad if used well. The have advantage in spool, that does make them interesting. But I think they aren´t as reliable as the journal bearing, KKK ones e.g.
Used in a proper way, BBs won´t give it up after 1000 km. So for non daily driven cars, tuning freaks, guys who want to have more power every 2 years, they will be fine. Well mapped and if the user knows how to handle turboscharged motors of course.
But if the car is driven daily, and has to last a few years, or if someone wants to do the whole tuning thing just one time, and then is happy with the power, journal bearings are in fact more reliable.
For the 500hp step I would recommend the gtx3071 as said before, which is able to do that nearly at limit, but hast best spool and boost at lowest rpm, or the gtx3076, which will boost a bit later and bit slower spool, but can give 500hp with more safety- or more hp if wanted :-)
S2 max rev with hydro is about 7500rpm, depending on cams I would try to set ppeak power level at 6500-7000rpm.
I would stay away from all that billett stuff, or chargers under 1000€.Comment

Our clients used without problem Holset HX40 Super 2years, after was used GTX35 garrets was damaged 2 turbos per year, always the same problem exhaust impeller damage. Manufacturer says to high EGT.Audi S4 2.6 20V STROKER kkk26/27Comment
