My cheapie thermostat has done this since new as well......so I wouldn't say it isn't faulty, it came faulty from the box!

I have a new OEM one coming from Quattro Corner, along with a pair of front wheel bearings, Pete is a nice chap

Alex - did you solve the low temp reading while cruising?

Well my thermostat, a Mahle one, despite looking a hundred times better than the last one, has started running cool again! Just over what I think is the 80C mark

Anyone got any good tips for catching coolant as it gushes out the thermostat hole -I'm getting fed up of forking out for new G13 each time I open it up!

Put a bucker under the radiator, undo the lower radiator hose, point the hose down into the bucket, if you have positioned the bucket correctly the radiator will also drain into it.

That's all good, and done, but when you pop the thermostat it only then empties the block, and quickly, and everywhere.

              Bigger bucket?

Tesco do a big rectangular storage box you can fit a cylinder head in, that would be a good catch bucket.

Bigger bucket = taller = need to jack the thing up to get it under, but yes, I will get creative this time I think

Yes mine heats up quickly now. Still displays under 90 when on higher speed cruise 60mph+ but I think that is due to the airflow over the sensor as temp pops back to 90 within 15 seconds of slowing down to town speeds. I don't run aux rad or the rad duct on the block side
