+ 1 to headphones, and its very cheap to do.

I have this http://www.phormula.com/KnockMonitor-KS-4.aspx but past about 6500rpm all i pick up is noise.

So do I need to add a knock sensor or just use one of the ones that's there? And won't the ecu restrict boost if the KS is disconnected?

The knock sensor is essentially a microphone that picks up audio frequency which is filtered and processed by the ECU... I don't think the ECU throws up a fault because a KS is unplugged - its because it sees zero signal where it expects to be hearing the engine running... Dmitri can confirm or correct me on that... Its something I will be needing to look into on the ESIM project but anyway.

You could just connect a suitable audio amplifier (working at microphone levels of input) across the KS output and listen to that on headphones - a common solution is to just hook up the mic input of a PC and use audio software on that to relay the signal to the headphone jack.

The KS wiring is signal, 0V and screen on pins 1-2-3 respectively.

High impedance of microphone connected in parallel to the KS means the ECU still hears signal as normal... some kind of cable adapter built around JPT-3 connector(s) would seem to be the way to go... easy to make with some robust screened audio cable and terminate in a 3.5mm jack at the PC input
