    judder judder

    Morning guys,

Had a strange one with the S2 (standard ABY with homefries & 145k miles) on the way home last night. I drove home ~13 miles and was stuck in slow moving traffic for 5 minutes or so (same as every night). Just as I was approaching a roundabout a very pronounced judder/hesitation started. It did this until I got home and was doing it under cruise, light boost AND idle. So, I got home and grabbed the garage keys while the wife left and moved her car from the driveway. My car still juddered all the way into the drive. I plugged in my diagnostic hand-held hoping it might point me in the right direction but only gave a 561 code, which has been there for a while. I got some tools and whipped of the coil cover, thinking there might be a plug loose or some damaged wiring but didn't find anything. I gave the injector harnesses a push & a wiggle in case one had come loose but again, didn't find anything. When I then started the car up (fearing the worst) it idled perfectly, as it always has.
When it was misbehaving there wasn't any funny noises, pops or bangs. It idled fine (other than the judder) and when driving just felt like it was down a cylinder. When boosting it a little bit it almost felt like it was getting better as the revs rose!?

I'm just wondering if I have a coil pack on the way out or, one of the little rubber plug boots. When I had the coil cover off its clear the coils and boots haven't been changed at all so this might be the issue here. Either that or could there be a duff injector?
Would any of these throw a code?
One other thing I noticed which might be totally unrelated is that when I tried the engine after looking around, I pulled the harness off the ISV and the idle smoothed out slightly and increased by a small amount. This could be a red herring though...

Any ideas guys? I like having problems that self repair but its better to know what actually happened too!

    many thanks in advance

My guess is coil breaking down with the heat from sitting in traffic. Car cools down and it runs ok.

Sounds like what mine did before I changed to the coil harness and 1.8T coils....

Cheers guys, that's kinda what I was thinking too. Anyone got a link to replacement coils (+harnesses?) that are plug n play?

Ok I've had a quick rummage around on here. Would these coils work ok? I guess I'd have to get a replacement loom from Error too?
Would doing this conversion remove the original POS units as well? I'll shut up now

Ok car's been fine ever since this happened, even though it was most definitely hotter on the way home last night!? Fecking motors!
If it happens again though, I'll go with the suggestions here and replace the coils etc otherwise I'll wait until spring time to upgrade

My car only did it every now and then and mainly when stationary but it was still enough for me to think I needed to get it done asap to keep the old girl running happily

The last thing you want is to be somewhere far away for a weekend for it to go properly on you... that would be hellish.

Hmm, you have a good point there. B@lls, more expenditure required

At least this way you are more prepared for any long drives... Thats why I got mine done so fast instead of waiting for it to go permanently on me....

...and I know how you feel about expenditure... already this week the dog has been to the vet and my roof has decided to allow water ingress into the year ago decorated back bedroom... So thats a roof fix to find and pay out for too now. Oh merry chirstmas indeed!!!!

After running flawlessly since this happened, I left work last night to find I was only running on 4 cylinders!
Managed to get home ok with it (about 13 miles) but it wasn't a pleasant journey home to say the least. When I got home I pulled the injector connectors off one by one until I found it was no. 1 cylinder that was dead. Went to move the car out of the way this morning and its running fine again GGRRRR!
Boy am I glad I ordered all these bits earlier on this week. I should be getting the new harness today (cheers again Alex!) but not so sure about the new coils. At least I should have all the wiring installed ready to drop in the coils whenever they turn up.
If this is the kind of crap that's going to happen, xmas is cancelled next year!
