Not sure if the thermostat is sensitive to this / or if it is possible to put it in the wrong way around ? New rubber seal ? Always a good idea, seal on which side of the thermostat?, but very unlikely to be related to your issue, unless the seal was left out.

But might as well fit it exactly as Audi intended.

Look up Dave's live links to verify which sensor, MFTS or the one at the back of the head, gives a signal to the dash's temperature gauge.

Look up how you trigger the dash gauge's wire in the engine bay to give a signal to the gauge, so that you can see that the gauge works.

Did you read other threads on the correct and the practical ways of bleeding the system ? My recollection is that it is not always straightforward to get it right.

Others need to chime in here.

Post up the cure in due course.

I've given up for today. Temperature climbs to 95C and just sits there, and thermostat isn't opening. I will leave it for tonight and see if air has escaped during the night. If not, I'll just drive it and wait for it to open.

Double check you have bleed the system correctly. I had similar symptoms which were air in the system...

What is the "procedure" to bleed the system?

I normally squash the top hose to get the bubbles out, fill and repeat, theres a bleed screw on top of the rad, one on the hose to the heater matrix. Let the car idle till the fan cuts in which can take quite a long time in this weather, allow to cool and check the level again. The thermostat has to be fitted with the small hole at the top IIRC.

The MFTS feeds the gauge, cold air blowing onto it can mean a low reading, if the rubber boot is not fitted for example, or the rad ducting removed.

The gauge needs a regulated supply, the regulator for this is on the back of the clocks, looks like a flat power transistor fitted with a bolt. Undo the bolt, clean the legs and the bolt to be sure the contacts are good, plug it back in and bolt it down. If it is a poor contact on the reg. the fuel gauge will red low too.

you bleed it when its not running open bleed screws when the coolant comes out do them up job done , you should never do it with the cap off. the coolant is under pressure to lift the boiling point

I fitted the new thermostat same way the old one came out (which was still oem unit). Problem I am getting here is I don't have bleed screw on top of the rad or on the hose that goes to matrix heater?

I might be looking in the wrong place, but I can't see a bleed screw.

Also, nothing has changed over night. So I am back to square one.

to see the bleed screw hose that goes to matrix heater your need to take of the plastic cover off that's at the back of your engine bay and go's up to the window
