Pull the bottom hose off again and see if you've got the inside layer of rubber turned over and blocking the pipe.Comment

Lower rad hose is good. When I turn heaters off, temp drops from right down to about 80C. As it's not overheating, I assume it's not getting upto temperature, what I can do is, drive as it is, on Friday I am going for a longer drive and keep an eye on the temperature and have water with me.'93 Audi 100 Avant - R.I.P

I don't have a fan. I have a viscous one running off drive belt.
I remember I had problems with bleeding the V6 system, but that was pretty easy, drove it hard for a bit and sorted.'93 Audi 100 Avant - R.I.P

I have 140 mile round trip tomorrow, can I drive the car or it's possible to damage the engine? Worse that can happen is thermostat is going to open, and I'll be bringing water with me if that happens?'93 Audi 100 Avant - R.I.P

When you changed the thermostat all the coolant would have drained from the block. If the bottom hose is not getting hot and you know you have a good working thermostat it would suggest that there is no coolant behind the thermostat to open it. take the top hose of the rad and "fill" the block put coolant in until it runs out of the top hose then reattach it to the rad and run the car. (You may have to do this twice) This would also explain why it has not taken as much coolant as you say it should. Always found this works.Comment

Got there and back ok. Didn't overheat, but thermostat didn't open either (I assume) as level didn't drop in the expansion tank. Did have to top it up a tiny bit but nothing major. At least now I as getting some pressure in the system, so I'll check in the morning see if has dropped again.
There is coolant in the block. If I take off the top hose coolant comes out straight, and when I was removing thermostat second time coolant was present. And it wouldn't run for long if there wouldn't be any coolant in the block. When you changed the thermostat all the coolant would have drained from the block. So dunno what's going on.
