How much torque can hold stock engine

Lately i have talk with Janis(hunker7) and Mark(Vorsprung durch technik) abouth upgrating our car's,we all talked abouth similar set up(volvo set up).
But i have read somewhere on forum(cant reamember where) that stock AAN cant hold more then 500 torque?
Prj pulled out from Volvo turbo around 350hp and 520 torque(so u get all the figures),so basicly i wanted to know how much torque can hold stock engine?
There are much more experienced guys over here so i belive we will get an answer and maybe open nice discussion for future references

I want to know this too. I'd much rather prefer torquey engine over one with loads of bhp.

Apparently the upper limit is 360ft-lb which is close to 500nm but im sure someone will be around with specifics

It all depends on the fuel and the mapping. Torque is only a indication of cylinder pressure. You could bend rods at 300 ftlb with crap fuel or mapping but be ok at 400 ftlb with good fuel and mapping.

I have heard of 500 bhp plus engines on stock rods.... also have heard of rs2 spec engines with holes in blocks.

Assuming that whatever turbo that is involved would have proper tuning by a competent tuner (a few names come to mind), my rule of thumb would be up to a K24-7200 turbo (and maybe the Volve K24-7400) an AAN/ABY/ADU can survive on stock rods. This would include GT2871 hybrids from 034 Motorsports. *HOWEVER*, as soon as you went larger than the K24-7200, e.g. a GT3071 or 3076 (or equivalent Holset), then you better have upgraded rods installed (and probabley ARP head and main crank studs).

This is based on watching from sidelines as people upgrade their AANs since 1998. I went full RS2 in 2004 and have never been worried about the rods. (Running MRC Stage 3 chipset making around 360 crank, 289 whp).

You got there before me Marko. I must be getting old.

So as has been mentioned a few of us would like to do the Volvo conversion. Thanks to Dave and diesel des for their comments. Are there any other big beasts who would like to contribute to the question posed? The more the merrier to give us peasants confidence that we wont destroy our engines.

Agreed,i would like to get the mapping done by PRJ. What would the mapping cost Dimitri? I am assuming you are looking at this thread.

Using a factor of 1.25 between wheel and crank, the 288.5 hp was 360 crank (which is what it was supposed to be according to Mihnea Cotet at MRC) so the 300 lb-ft max torque would be about 375 lb-ft or 508 N-m.

The reported issues on stock engines tend to have other facts behind the stories, as hinted above.

I run 350-360ftlbs on a stock engine and stock 3B clutch and it's not bent anything in over 3 years

I know that people have pushed 450bhp on a stock engine with the right mapping but I can't imagine that there's any margin for error in all that...
