Total cut out in full flow

I seriously have a knack of jinxing myself...

So, theres me driving along tonight, and I thought to myself "wow, for the 1st time in a very long time this thing [car] is moving brilliantly. Power was there, braking was perfect, handling felt good... basically, I was enjoying the drive.

I then pulled up to a set of traffic lights, stopped, and once the lights changed moved off. Then after a few seconds, and all of a sudden with no warning, whilst in 2nd gear I had a total power cut - no throttle what-so-ever! Then the power steering went dead, and gradually so did the brakes. SH*********************T

Pulled over ASAP into a bus stop (had no choice as thats were the car decided to come to a stand still). Tried to turn the ignition, but it just turned and turned but did not spark up.

Waited for a few minutes, and then tried to turn it again, but still no luck  (At this point Paul N I gave you a bell for some much needed help and advice).

Any ideas guys what could be wrong???

The worst thing about this whole thing is that the car is currently sitting in a dodgy part of town, which has a reputation for thefts, muggings, vandalism etc. As I was walking away from the car I noticed smashed car
glass scattered all over the floor! Gonna go back there later tonight in the hope that the thing turns on I can just drive it home for its safety

    A totally gutted

Dangit Alps - missed your call earlier - the joys of 'silent' mode...

Strongly suggest you get it towed somewhere safe !

Know anyone with enhanced membership in AA or RAC ? - they can pretend to be a passenger while you wait for the flat-bed truck to take you home.

That sounds like an electrical fault by what you describe (most likely that really crappy alarm/immo installation finally letting you down).

Check the MOTOR fuses in the fusebox, then all the connections and fuses related to that alarm. It sounds like something stupid like that... Other possibilities are fuel pump or relay.

    Good Luck,

      Thanks Paul for the reply.

Im going to visit the car again later tonight in the hope that it has "miraculously" sorted itself out. I dont think its the alarm though because the engine still turns and isnt immobilised.

Sods law that this has happened now - I had it booked in at audi on wednesday to sort out the tracking etc, then had planned to sort out the hoses and tappits for an emergency sale in November ops:

Oh well, will keep you guys informed as to what happens

      Thanks

GET IT MOVED!!! That will end up with its windows beaten in. I hate leaving my car anywhere. People in the area get to know 'your' car and think that it would be good to nick. Luckily everytime mine has broken down, the old man has dragged it to safety. Thank god for owning a workshop.

Alps - it very well could be the immo - the car could crank all day (until the battery dies) if the immo is wired thru the fuel pump or ignition system.

Hope you got it to safety anyway !

I had a bad immobiliser install on my UR which used to bring me to a halt at the most desparate times, like in the middle of Cornwall in the middle of the night, or on Spaghetti Junction etc etc, turned out they had broken the feed to the coil and wired into it with Scotchlocks. Took me ages to find as sometimes you could go away and come back an hour later and it would just start up.

I removed several kilos of little anonymous boxes and wiring from under the dash of my S2 after loosing the immob key from my rucksack on a bike ride up the motorway.. I'm not joking several kilos.. got the car running anyway but there was still a little led that would sometimes be red and sometimes amber turned out there was still more wiring and boxes still there God knows what they were for, one box had a wire going to every switch on the dash!!

            I hate alarms:mad:

                Thanks guys for the advice.

I went back to the car last night to try it again, and to make sure that it was still there... in 1 piece!

Held my breath, kept my fingers...and toes crossed, said a little prayer, promised to do some charity work, and then turned the key... NOTHING! Just kept turning and turning. I tried to check the wires to the alarm, and the fuse box, but even with a pretty darned powerful torch this was kinda difficult. I didnt want to make it too obvious that the car was bu**gered (the fact that the engine kept turning, and I was effin n blindin kinda gave it away some-what!!!) So I just secured the thing up, took out all valuables etc, told it "everythings gonna be just fine then kissed it goodnight, and came home.

But, gonna go pick it up this afternoon (million squid says that its been blocked in bumper to bumper, hence making it a mission n a half to take out!)

                Oh well... ... ... ... ... ...

Just a quick update on the deserted car...

Dad was having a chat with his mate, and he mentioned the unfortunate predicament of my car; He also mentioned the even more unfortunate location of it. Having heard the location, his mate had nothing but sympathy and worry for the car, and told my dad that if he was to buy him a "coupla pints" he'd have his brother hoist the car to the safety of my home

So, now Im just waiting for that phone call to say the car is safe, and home where it belongs Phew

Then the next mission will begin.. to ascertain what the probem is, and to have it hoisted to the mechanics

                  To be continued....

                      It's home, and safe... Pheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeew!

Gonna try to jet home early tomorrow to have a good look at the wires in the day light.

I think I've just receaded my hairline by a good few inches these last 24 hours!

                          Update:

Last night I totally cut out the alarm using the over-ride key in the hope that the alarm was the reason why the car cut out. Then tried to start the car... nothing; The engine just turned and turned again.

A mate of mine thinks that maybe, just maybe, my spark plugs need a good clean/change. But, if this was the case, would dirty sparkys cause the car to cut out in full flow? Also, is there a special tool needed to open up the compartment where the sparkys are located?

If this is not the symptom, then I guess that it could only be the fuel pump.

Well, I'm kinda looking on the bright side of this - at least I'm saving money on petrol (the fact that this whole thing will prob cost me a few hundred quid is beside the point!!!)

                          Thanks all for the advice

                              Thanks Doug for the offer.

Once I know whether it is/isnt the pump I'll give you a shout.

I'm having a former audi md mechanic coming over this weekend to give it a once over, so hopefully he'll be able to pin point the problem... However, if he's anything like the audi md mechanics ive come across he'll probably show up 1 month late! He'll also 'tut tut' away and point out a million and 1 other faults (which no doubt my car really does have!)
