    Aby s2 smoking

My aby s2 has started to smoke recently.

It smokes on idle 2-3 mins after starting up.

It also smokes on boost leaving a puff of blue smoke behind.

It's taking around 1 litre of oil every 600-700 miles.

Firstly, I did a compression test with the following result:

    Cylinder 1: 11 bar
    Cylinder 2: 11 bar
    Cylinder 3: 10.5 bar
    Cylinder 4: 11 bar
    Cylinder 5: 11.5 bar

    They all seem fine.

I checked both the hot side and cold side of the turbo for oil but were both dry with no oil residue.

There is also minimal play in the turbo shaft.

The turbo still boosts to 1.5 bar (it's got a prj map).

There seems to be no loss in power or acceleration that I've noticed.

My next step was to check all the hoses.

All hoses were dry including the intercooler pipes, inlet pipe etc.

I then had a look at the air filter box to turbo hose.

This was full of oil residue.

Where is the oil coming from?

    Is this a pcv issue?

Any ideas what would be causing this?

how did you drive your car normally? hard luanches?

maybe you need sump baffle and relocate the breather outlet under the valve cover.
most of the time PCV does nothing on this car.

Maybe PCV is just blocked, take all the pipes off, wash them out and replace the large and small valves.
Worth a go and cheap enough.

Smoking on boost is the oil that builds up in the intercooler. The oil is most likely coming from the PCV as john said.
We are dealing with cars that are now over twenty years old. Some PCV have never been cleaned. so its understandable that some smoke.
There is a copper wire flame trap that gets gunged up. Most people remove it.
There are also two one way valves. One is the black round disc coming of the side of the engine under the inlet manifold.
The other is much smaller, and is down at the back of the rocker cover.

I checked all the pipes and blew compressed air into them and they were all clear

Next step is to change the pcv and small valve

An update on my smokey S2.

I cleaned all the breather pipes etc and replaced both the PCV valve and the one way valve.

Initially, the car smoked a little less and the oil cosumption dropped to around 900 miles a litre.

Having checked the air filter box to turbo hose, once again there was oil residue in there.

It's back to taking a litre of oil every 700 miles again.

Any ideas on what else it could be causing the oil in the hose?

Could it be my turbo? Both the hot and cold side were dry?

I have the same problem, but not looked into it yet as plan is to change turbo and map etc in next year or so, so I'm just keeping it topped up.

I'd assumed my turbo as it's probably original, to humour me PCV? At half 7 in the morning my brain can't work out what it stands for.

If u don't have pcv what COULD happen or what signs and symptoms would you see if thats the case ? (mine also smokes and misfires on start up but clears but getting full rs2 setup and service next month cant wait )
                      Cheers in advance

If the crank case isn't ventilated correctly via standard PCV system or aftermarket breather, combustion gasses can build up pressure inside the engine (as they have nowhere to escape to). This can help push oil up past the oil control rings and make the engine smoke.
As a test, try starting the car without the oil cap on and put your hand over the hole; can you feel a lot of gas pluffing out? If you can then I'd say this points to a blocked/ineffective PCV/breather system...or worn rings
I would imagine that would only get worse the more boost you try to stick through it so if it was my car, I'd be trying to sort this out before upping the power any.

Blowing air through the PCV system isn't enough. You need to take it off and clean all that sticky goop out, including the cam cover if its an ABY. Clean the flame trap or replace it.
It will take you some time to do all of this, the oil residue is thick & very sticky and takes some serious cleaning. Buy some bottle brushes and a load of carb cleaner to scrub and blow trough all the PCV pipes until it runs clean. Also take the intercooler off and flush that until it's clean. Clean all your intake pipework. FWIW I have no oil residue in my MAF to turbo hose, using stock breather system with freshly built bottom end - the system does work very effectively if in good order on a standard car.
