Describe how you checked the timing. Flywheel, inside dizzy and cams?

Does the car have an aftermarket alarm immobiliser?

Can you read codes with Vagcom?

Or blink the codes with a LED?

You can also check the hall sensor signal with an LED I think..

If that was ok I'd maybe take the starter motor off and check that the timing pin is present.

Flywheel timing pin as John says. Not the easiest to check, but will cause a no start if it's snapped off. I had this happen on my 3B.

Sorry to highjack a bit - are 7a/3b hall sensors units the same or have the same specs as a AAN cam position sensor units (just thesensor itself) ? I fitted one (it fits) but haven't tested in the car yet. Easier to source - 15$ US at EFI express on this side of the pond.
