    Yes, looks that way.

I'm no expert but to me it looks like the nut loosened, the extra play caused the shaft to snap which then allowed the exhaust wheel to be shat down the downpipe, bashing the lambda on the way through.

Damn sorry to see this happened !i don't think it's worth for a rebuild you completely lost comp wheel and turbine shaft.

On a plus, you get my 'epic turbo fail' award, what with fishing the turbine out of the exhaust. What a mess! At least that nut didn't get ingested, you could have been fishing it out of the combustion chamber

Or possibly, the shaft snapped due to something out of balance at high turbo rpm - the nut would then be loose and would just spin off as the wheel slowed down suddenly. Or am I trippin?

Haha cheers, yeah that nut could have done some damage.

I'm not sure, I think when the nut is tight it would hold the compressor wheel tight against the "platter". As the shaft snapped on the other side of the platter it shouldn't have loosened the compressor side. It is strange that the nut didn't impact the compressor wheel at all though. So it could have gone as you say. I'll get the turbo shop to have a look and see what they think.

I've sent this turbo and another off today so will hopefully have at least one good turbo fairly soon. The oil seals on the hot side have completely disappeared! Can't find a trace of them, which explains the liter of oil I've poured out of the exhaust and the huge plumes of smoke it made when it went!

Cheers for all the messages of condolence!
