Sat at the side of the road...

So was out for a run today and while going through a village at a sedate speed, there was a loud sound like gravel hitting the car and then the engine cutout...

On inspection, the alternator belt had disintegrated and oddly the car wouldn't start.

Long and short, looks like the alternator belt has caused the cambelt to jump... have to wait and see when I get it apart but just waiting for a flat bed to get me the 3 miles home now...

So the belt put a hole in the cambelt cover and then got caught up. The belt slipped about 10 teeth. Gutted.

The engine did turn over by hand when checking the timing but not really sure where to go from here. I've set the timing again and the engine turns over cleanly. Not sure if there's a chance of things hitting as it's on stock cams, so may have clearance?

Guess I'll need to put it back together properly. It turned over cleanly with the timing set but I didn't feel much compression. That said, I can't remember if it was like that when I built it...

All my fingers crossed for you mate
Re-set timing & see if it will run. If it does, compression test and go from there. If not, head off etc

Pics of the belt remains found in the cambelt cover and the pulley.

The 3B, AAN, ABY and ADU are all interference engines and if you break a cam belt or the timing gets shoved over too far (10 teeth probably qualifies as "too far") the pistons hit at least one cylinder's intake valves, i.e. 2. Sorry to tell you that.

Hope I am wrong about 10 teeth being too far.

So based on this photo from the Audi Museum, you're talking the "serpentine" mult-groove belt? On the AAN, we have a true serpentine belt and there are several stories about the "serp" belt failing, getting bits caught up in the cam belt and taking the cam belt out, resulting in at least two bent valves and a head removal repair.

Bad news Andy. Hope there's no damage or if there is, it's limited to a couple of bent valves.
