This was a Conti belt from GSF. There had been a chirp on startup a few times of late but with the car sitting outside and the weather being wet and cold, this wasn't a surprise. The belt was tight.
Looks like the guide that stops the PAS belt wobbling about guided the broken belt to its final destination...Cheers'en, AndyC

So took a brave pill and got the head off today...
10 bent valves and some massaged pistons but nothing too serious. Head will be heading to JP for inspection and repair and I'll have 10 new ornaments to wow and amaze guests with.
The impact also sheared the cam pulley key, so a replacement pulley & new cambelt will be going on and I'll check the billet lower pulley at the same time.
Not what I had planned this month but there we go...Cheers'en, AndyC

I cleaned it to check over; it was pretty sooty before
Plugs are a nice colour so I'm sure it's running properlyish.
Yes, Alex, it came apart so easily, I'm surprised it stayed together
All stainless fasteners, new gaskets and I torqued everything to the factory manual values.

Andy, going back to the side of the road, I know it's impossible to know, but do you think the damage would have been less had you not tried to restart the car after it cut out. I know from personal experience that our instinct is to try to start the engine but maybe if we just said to ourselves " right a belt has gone, let's get recovered and get to a garage to get a proper inspection " perhaps no bent valves? Or does it all happen in the blink of an eye?So was out for a run today and while going through a village at a sedate speed, there was a loud sound like gravel hitting the car and then the engine cutout...
On inspection, the alternator belt had disintegrated and oddly the car wouldn't start.
Long and short, looks like the alternator belt has caused the cambelt to jump... have to wait and see when I get it apart but just waiting for a flat bed to get me the 3 miles home now...
Gutted for you anyway.1996 S2 ABY Coupe silver

I think Andy's damage happened as soon as the broken alternator belt got tangled in with the cam belt and the cam belt skipped 10 teeth. A few rotations later, the 10 intake valves were bent. It was over before he pulled to the side of the road. The restarting attempt, while retrospectively ill-advised, probably added no further damage. It was done.
At least when the cam belt breaks the valve train doesn't rotate anymore and only two or four intake valves get piston-whipped and bent. Not much difference in the amount of labour to fix both scenarios though. Head has to come off.RS2'd 93 UrS4 5 spd sedan

Valves were all bent in a fraction of a second. As soon as the timing belt slipped, they were gone.
There was no sign that the cambelt had been affected (the hole I found was small and obscured from view) and the chances of an alternator belt affecting the cambelt are tiny, so it didn't cross my mind. Sat at the side of the road in the middle of nowhere on a cold & rainy day, anyone would try to get back to warm cup of tea...
Basically, it was a freak occurance and there was not anything I could have done. To say anything else is just rubbing salt in the wound.Last edited by Rusty; 2 April 2016, 16:27.Cheers'en, AndyC
