Paul: is there no way to test a B3/B4 fuel pump using the S13 fuse holder like I can with a C4 fuel pump via the (+) post under the bonnet and the C4 S17 fuse holder? I can do this and never even have to turn the ignition on.

You probably could lash up something like that with care but it's pretty easy to make a jumper link.

That being the case, I would still want to just test the fuel pump and not power anything else. So I would remove the 208 FP relay and jump from the "30" (constant power female spade slot) to the downstream side of the S13 fuse.

Which is exactly what you do with a jumper at the fuel pump relay between pins 30 and 87.

Sorry to hear about a problem with Avant,it does look like a fuel starvation,i would try easy think first like fuel filter change. It's a cheap and it won't hurt to change it .

Fuel filter change on Avant is nightmare-ish if I recall.

Checked fuel delivery, disconnected fuel line in engine bay and stuck it in a bottle, removed relay and jumped the fuel pump .. Fuel just dribbling out. Went and got a gallon of fresh fuel and poured it in. Pump filled a litre bottle in a few seconds.
Tank must be empty but showing nearly 1/2 full so sender sticking.

I was thinking that jumping from 30 to 87 (not 87a) would also power up the S25 fuse and the S25's downstream devices and that that wouldn't be good. However, I see now that S25 is the O2 (lambda) sensor heater so no biggy. With the C4s, at least on my side of the pond, accessing the J17 208 FP relay isn't easy so the (+) cowl post and the S17 fuse holder is much easier than jumping the 208 FP relay.
