ABY timing problem using 26 tooth water pump

    Hello everyone

I write desperate because I found a problem when I trying to change the timing belt on my engine.

My engine is a stock ABY with stock camshafts but I have installed PKM crank gear and "26 tooth pulley" water pump PKM. The problem appears when I tried to locate the toothed belt in the stock cam gear (034109105). It don`t match. I am not able to install the belt because having the crank in correct position ( by marks in damper and flymass-wheel) the cam pulley gear need to be rotated "1 teeth" to fit it.

My question is: It is possible to solve it installing an adjustable pulley cam gear as PKM, Dahlback or Tommy´s Billet? I know this one is most used for RS2 and I don`t know if the sprocket wheel for hall sensor has the same position in ABY and ADU engine exhaust cam gear pulleys. (Is known they have different PN on ETKA, 034109105 and 105B)

What do you suggest to solve it??

    Many thanks

Please wait for someone can confirm this, but with the 26 tooth water pump sprocket, you do indeed set the cam sprocket one tooth out.

    Please wait for confirmation

After an extensive searching on this Forum I have see that is not possible to get the correct ABY timing using the "26 Tooth Rs2 Water Pump". No matter what combination of 150, 151 teeth belt you use.

If you use 26 teeth WP (RS2) you must use 034109105 B Cam pulley Gear ( From OEM ADU). But if use this option on ABY / ANN the Engine will not works properly due to 10º of advance timing in hall sensor sprocket wheel inside Cam Pulley.

If you use 29 teeth WP you must use 034109105 Cam pulley Gear ( From OEM ABY/AAN).

This 1 tooth difference when mixing these spares could be fitted using an adjustable cam gear as Dahlback, tommy´s Billet or PKM but you should verify that hall sensor sprocket wheel match with the OEM position.

About the timing belt it has two ways interchangeability because the tensioner assume the different length of both.

You can run the RS2 belt and pump perfectly wel on the S2 cam pulley and cams.

As per Alex there is nothing that will alter your timing

            Hi Terrybullwon

You are right, the belt don` t alter rhe timming but the 26 teeth water pump for sure.

Please explain to me the relation of the water pump to the crank shaft pulley and the cam pulley

ABY timing problem using 26 tooth water pump

The water pump pulley is on the tight side between the cam pulley and crank. Changing its size will cause the cam to rotate one way or the other in relation to the crank. Ok if this is a whole tooth out because the belt can just be repositioned on the cam pulley but if it's half a tooth out then a decision has to be made which way to go. If I found myself in this situation I would go with the same half a tooth out displacement as in the standard RS2 config. There is a thread about this on the forum somewhere.

Half a tooth is very little in degree terms
I had mine advanced half a tooth, which should improve VE lower in the rev range. Made 286hp and 315lbft on the K24 7000. So I'm sure it does run pretty well

its the cam of rs2 with its sprocket that shifts the timing on the rs2. not the waterpump.

The explanation of Newsh is exactly what happens when installing 26 Teeth Water pump on ABY.

In my case. I`m running with standard cams and pulleys and I have to decide in which way ( advance or retarded) I move the cam pulley to engage the belt. But if I like to do get the factory timing I have to go back for the 29 th water pump.

I'm wondering why you went for the RS2 pump....
There's nothing to gain in my opinion.

So are you using the standard ABY timing belt or the RS2 timing belt?

Interesting to see opinions on the half tooth setting, I had put mine 1/2 tooth to the left of the cam cover mark. Goto change mine soon so interested to hear opinions
