NEED HELP ASAP. 1990 Coupe Quattro 7A

So a few months back I decided to rev my coupe up to redline with a few friends around. The car hit redline for a second and the RPMs immediately dropped as if it was decelerating. The car then continued to drop under 1000 RPMs and then stalled out. Now it will not turn back on, it will crank but not start. Also, a flashing oil light came on after the car shut off but only did it once or twice. Any input?!

When was the cam belt and tensioner changed last. Maybe look at the basin stuff first. You may have jumped a tooth. So have you any codes ?.

        Check the timing
Cylinder one at tdc on compression stroke
        Flywheel on zero mark
Dizzy rotor mark aligned with casing.
        Maybe dizzy gear has stripped.

This would be the best case scenario.

It does sound like a mechanical failure, as above checking the valve timing is the first step.

          Best of luck.

pull the distributor cap and see if the rotor rotates - stripped plastic gear, if intact, you need to check the timing belt..

my timing belt looks to be intact, but my distributor gear was making a ton of rattling before i had this incident happen. dont know when the timing was last done, but im sure it could of used it. i have a 20vt swap awaiting at home , i just need to get the car home and figured id try to get it running before towing it

did not get to check if the teeth line up though. i also dont think the RPMs would have dropped like a normal decel if i jumped timing? especially that high in revs?

As above, check dizzy, timing belt before anything else.

Is it a rare occurrence that you rev it to red line, or am I reading too much into that? Mine will hit 7K most days I take it out, more than once for sure, these 7As do love to rev

This was the first time I brought it up that high but it was at idle not while driving
