Not good then, sound like I have made the issue worse,

OK, need to replace the dissy gear (which could mean IM off)
Need to locate and gear bits and do oil change !
Timeing will need setting up etc....

And possibly at the end I may still be left with the origional fault,

Perhaps changing the Fuel Pressure Regulator at the same time would be advised

I wonder now if my basic mech skills are sufficient.

      Fuel Pump Regulator

If I now need to potentialy replace the Fuel Pump Regulator then would to be worth looking at an uprated one for future Mods.

I have read that the FPR from a 7A runs at a higher pressure and will be a direct fit

It IS a direct fit, but you will run rich using the 7A FPR on stock 3B chips.

Get a fuel pressure test done - you should see 3.5bar across the injector.

FPR wont make it not start. I would say replace the dizzy (complete) as you dont know if your hall sender is ok and that comes with new dizzy, along with cap and rotor arm. Complete dizzy is £148+vat exchange from the audi dealer. Maybe VAGparts can do you a deal on this?

Porkis, I think if there is a sensor input missing then you just get one spark per revolution, at TDC. This is certainly the case with older systems in the urs.

George, when you fit the new dissy you MUST get the marks aligned exactly right, be sure to turn the engine in the right direction when checking the alignment too. If alignment is not spot on you will get a misfire.

U don´t need to remove the inlet manifold. I made a tool shaped like a "Z" out of a 13 mm wrench. Works fine. Saves U the trouble.
I had the same problem. Be sure to get the timing right.

Ok, could be. I stand by Paul then

Søern, it might be a bit harder on RHD cars. We can access the dizzy bolt from behing the engine but on RHD cars the brake stuff might make this unpossible. And having the battery and battery support on the inlet side it probably is a PITA.

Well it's not actually easy on LHD eighter and the official story is the blah blah about removing the IM but I've done it plenty of times now on different cars and no big deal with proper tools really.
