  • Black Ellipsoids - How to

On the weekend I was bored so decided to paint the chrome on my ellipsoids like a few others on the forum.

Here is a little how to guide:

It’s a very easy straight forward process -

You just need a small pot of Black Gloss Hammerite and a couple of paintbrushes.

Avoid all contact on the Ellipsoid surface as this will leave smudges that show up when they illuminate.
Don’t mask of the chrome that you don’t want painted as removing the masking take after chroming can damage the paint.
If you do want to cover the chrome arias that don’t require painting you can paint on multipurpose grease with a fine paint brush. This can be removed afterwards with ease and will stop and over spill of unwanted paint.

    Here is a few pics:

Remove Ellipsoids and temperately replace with original lights:

Apply one neat fairly think cote of paint to the chrome:
The better the brush the less brush strokes in the paint. However these don’t show up much once the paint is dried and the glass is reattached.
I would not recommend painting the High Beam dish.
I also left the ring around the Ellipsoid unpainted. This is down to your own discretion.
I also painted the Dish for the side lights – I would not recommend this unless you have changed your side lights to LED’s as these don’t requite any reflection to increase the strength of the beam.
