its the water drain - where all tge water that runs off the screen drains to
Interesting find with this, quite a few cars develop cracks around the base of the a-pillars, its a high stress area I guess.
Looks like the flex in the chassis panels has degraded the seam sealer and let the water in
mmmm - I must admit that my water issue got decidely worse last year after much frolicking in the snow - donuts aplenty for a laugh with the kids in a big car park. I have been sheltering a fear that I might have stressed something and this would be further evidence - although most of my woes came from door seal and sunroof tray.
I am about 97% dry these days, but a deluge of rain still lets some sneak in on drivers side.
Great work by newsh on discovery & documentation... gotta look into this one further.
My 2.0 8v coupe, (which is my daily) is bone dry, even the boot - my s2 coupe though, is very damp in the drivers footwell, maybe the s2's just stress their bodyshells too much ?

Looks like water has been running down the leading edge of the drivers window and dropping down onto the top hinge in the door shut which is conveniently pointing at the inner edge of the door seal which runs down the inside of the seal then pi***s on the floor under the carpet. Sneaky b*st**d!
This is the next area I need to look at on the coupe, I've replaced the door seal with a better second hand one but I think its still leaking a bit..
There was a helluva torrent of rain yesterday and my drivers seat got wet AGAIN courtesy of the sunroof rain try that I thought was watertight after the last repair... the sheer volume of water must push the level higher than normal - then it creeps over that lip and into the roof lining where if finds its way towards the A-pillar and drips on the seat when it saturates.
On my Avant as well as dealing with the areas you've done already I also mastick sealed the pollen filter seal and also removed the wheel arch liner and sealed the long vertical seam to the bulkhead. No pictures but obvious when the arch liner is out.
@ Paul, I get the same if it really chucks it down, I think the only way to stop it is to fit a new sunroof seal as the old one is compressed and the water can really pour in.
@ epic, I'll have a look at that on the next session!
I think you're right Mr Newsh, a new sunroof seal is on my list of bits to buy at some point, always seems to be bigger fish to fry though
I'm hoping a new sunroof seal and fitting my forthcoming new windscreen properly will hopefully seal the deal so to speak.
For the foreseeable future, my garage roof is doing a great job of keeping the water out
My S2 has a little damp patch in the driver's foot well - I suspect I have the same problem as NEWSH. Will be having a look over next couple of days and applying the fix as described.
Above said, was giving my Allroader a clean this morning - I was vacuuming out the front passenger foot well and after lifting the rubber mat found a puddle of water on the carpet!!!!
I stripped back the carpet, felt up the top of the bulk head - and the sound proofing was soaking wet - the water smelt of Carwash wax mix!!! Thinking about S2 problem, I decided to investigate the pollen filter directly above situated above the scuttle tray nearside.
O **** I thought, the pollen filter (supposed to be reasonably white) was about 1/3 black and soaking wet. Water from the scuttle tray must have been running off and soaking through the filter, dropping into the gap below - thus then finding it's way into the bulkhead, trickling down into the foot well!
Closer inspection of the pollen filter tray, lead me to believe the rubber seal was probably also knackered as after removal, the sponging around the seat was also soaking wet. I suspect, water has not only soaked through the pollen filter from the scuttle tray, but also dropping down and running in under and between the rubber seal.
Am currently waiting for the carpet to dry out together with the sponging round the seal of the filter box housing - looks like I'll be masking up - I will be using some double - glazing black sealant - this stuff is very flexible in application and drys flexible but firm too! Should help with any body flex.
My problems didn't end there though - I decided to check the rest of the area below the scuttle tray - and where the Brake Servo sits against the bulk head I noticed it is sitting in about 2 inches of water - water the heck! I tried to have a good look around and suspect I have a blockage in one of the corners which is probaly due to leaves - I have a big **** willow tree on my drive that the car sits under. Got to go back out tomorrow to try and get my hands into the area. THe thing is though, we've just come through winter - there's no leaves on the tree - so the leaves must have been blocking the drain for months!
I appreciate we're S2 Forum here, but anyone else had probs similar with their A6 - Allroader or otherwise???

Get those scuttle drains cleared out, the seals will leak if there's any depth of water, its just not supposed to happen, I think there may be a central one on the Allroad, not sure..
Also on the Allroad, check the connection of the pipe for the rear screen wash which goes through the passenger footwell. Not sure if your smell of wash is coming from there?
Will also check the Rear Washer feed just in case. Just a quick note as well - I know some of the other Audi's have covers over the Pollen Filter - should the Allroader have a cover?

When i bought my avant the owner didnt tell me it was flooding in water on passenger side, so i found out a week into owning it, felt like driving back to the guy and give him some serious abuse. I changed the pollen filter cover under the screen for a new genuine one and sealed the lip which meets the screen, which made it better, then i dropped the roof lining on the front to expose the sunroof and noticed that water was treakling through a hole which some sort of metal pipe goes through, I slid the sunroof back ans slightley undone the sunroof frame screws and grey sealered from inside, tightened the screws again, cleaned any sealer that was visable while the sunroof was still back, and now it is proper dry
