    Fecking coupe window adjustment!!!

    aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrgh!!!

I've been trying to get my driver's side window to sit properly and seal properly since the summer and it's doing my head in. I had to remove the regulator to clean and rebuild it and then it started...

Over the weekend, I tried to adjust it a bit more, then the motor gave up the ghost, so I had to replace the motor and try again. It wasn't ideal but a little bit of fiddling this morning lead to one of the cables popping off this morning, just when it was nice and cold and windy outside with spots of rain that started just as it all went wrong... I've spent a few hours today rebuilding it again and getting it working...ish. Put it all back together, put the window up and it must have moved a bit, as it's tight at the front More to do then.

Then I've got to sort the passenger side, as that's started with the wind noise after I re-hung the passenger side door.

Suffice it to say, I'm properly annoyed with it today

The windows and regulators on the coupe are not the best of designs. Good luck as I've been through the same hassle refitting mine. I left it unfinished in the end!

      Struggling as well with this
Apart from adjustments made with the mounting frame can anyone suggest a benchmark for the spacers ? ie more spacers at the bottom so as the window rises in the concave way it would seal better at the top ?
For what this cost me so far I could have bought an S2

Well your doing better than me. When I had my coupe I was adjusting the drivers window so I didn't get wet when washing the car. Thought I had it, closed the door gently... You could have counted to ten... And then filled the drive with glass! Suffice to say I was annoyed at the lack of drivers window!

Getting it 90% done is fine, it's the last little bit. There must be a VAG manual from back in the days when the dealers had to do this sort of thing!

It is hardwork, did mine a long time ago when I replaced the door seals and took several hours to get them adjusted right. Needs tweaking again now and the door latches dont always catch properly and been putting it off for ages

the key: different size spacers and patience

its not that difficult, with a little time and play you can find the necessary spacers.
i have at least 5 different size of spacers, that makes me think Jurgen did the same in the factory as well, they didn't have a size fit all spacer.

Can you elaborate on shim sizes, where they go and what that adjust please

Preaching to the choir, mate. I still haven't replaced my drivers door card since swapping regulators in the summer as it's still letting in water

The windows regulator (the frame) is adjusted by the shims.

I found in coupes and cabriolets like 5 different sizes.
That makes me think audi used this difeerent size shims to shim out the frame. IE when you roll up your window it will line up.

And your always going to have more shims/spacers at the bottom of the frame than the top due to the shape of the glass ?

I noticed at least two different thicknesses of the large 'U' shaped spacers on my regulator.

There is no factory proceedure to set it up. The manual tells you to mark up the old regulator and replace all the shims in the correct place
I have no idea how they set them up from the factory but they must have used some kind of jig that attached to the door to simulate the apperture. Whichever, I'm sure that they had lots come back to the dealer with issues

Been thinking about how to do this and had a few ideas. The biggest issue I've had is getting the window to fill the seal (luckily, I put the spacers back in pretty muchthe right order).

Firstly, off the car, I need to even up the front and rear runners such that the window lifts and lowers to the stops without twisting.

Then with the regulator at the lowest of its adjustment on the door fittings, I need to adjust the glass by adjusting it to fill the window aperture with a small, uniform gap above the window. This will take some time, as adjusting the glass position is made difficult by Audi fitting the adjuster screws on the hidden side and not the acecessible side

Once the glass is in place and has a pretty much uniform gap all around, as well as lifting and lowering properly and having the black rubber triangle in approximately the right place I'll use the adjustment on the frame. With some help using a glass sucker or two, loosen off the 6 screws and with the door closed, lift the window into place such that it fills the seal and then tighten it up. This requires a gap of less than 1/4" but should mean that the window sits properly in the seal.

                              OR

With the glass retaining screws slightly loosened and the regulator at the top, lift the galss into the seal from inside the car. This will be difficult, as getting the retaining screws loose but still able to hold the glass seems like an almost impossible task. Perhaps some wedges or spaces will help between the cream plastic strips and glass.

Will have a look and see what I can do...
