The fork bit of number 12 goes on the outside of the door frame with the bolt going through the gap of the fork, into the threaded hole. the flat bit of that same part tucks underneath, away from the door card. If you have spacers (number 10) they usually go up through the hole, between the metal of the door and the aluminium frame that holds the window glass. If you think about moving the aluminium frame in and out towards you or away from you, it pivots the glass in and out too. so more spacers at the bottom will push the top of the glass in towards the roof of the car, where it needs to be tight to stay sealed.
I hope that makes sense... and that I'm not talking ********

      WTF are these?

Looks like mine are missing, in any case I'm sure they're there to hold the spacers in position while you tighten the bolt. So if the horizontal bit goes in the slot and the vertical bit goes outside the door it might work better, thing is then will you be able to keep the 2 spacers in place and get the bolt in ??

My driver's side only has one spacer.

      Passenger has 2

If I remember correctly I've had a range of cars with different numbers of spacers. maybe in the factory they use whatever's needed in each case to allow for small differences in each car?

          I'm sure this is true

I reckon the cover plate goes completely outside. There's plenty of room for it as it's the door car that closes on the rubber seal and they've left plenty of space for the bolt head, washer and cover plate.

            Thanks guys!
I agree it makes more sense if the fork part was on the outside of the door and the tang part goes inside and either supports the distance piece or stop them falling out!
Perhaps someone has used the fork in lieu of another distance piece to adjust the window against the seal over the decades. So I would need to make a note of the thickness and have another distance piece on hand to make the difference up.

If you refit it as you've said, then test it you should be able to tell if you need any additional spacers. if the top of your glass fits tight to the rubber door seal that's probably fine. Sitting inside you can push against the top edge of the glass to test if it gives. A good spray with a hose should show you if any water gets in. Also if you go for a spin you can usually hear the wind if you have any gaps.

Typically after spending most of last night looking for photographic evidence of the correct fitment without sucesss, the day after someone posts something! So thanks to NZSPQ for accidently helping out!
