It goes down and under the beam, where the oilcooler is from scratch

Once a few suitable locations have been found, use a digital indoor/outdoor thermometer with a long enough lead and check the temps at the various locations. Can vary quite a bit.
The possibilities for an effective heat shield will also determine location. On cars that I have tested, for example on a day with 5deg ambient, the surface temp of a filter inside the airbox will typically be 7C, while the surface temp of a poorly shielded cone will be in the 30-50C range, even at speed, so proper shielding and location is crucial.

I'm not bothered about type of cones on this thread more how and where they've been installed on the S2
It really was too small to begin with. Back to the olde standby for now:

Copy the typ85 coupe quattro location....

I bet he has no issue with inlet temps, just the risk of ingesting small children, low flying birds and anything else that gets in the way!!!

My series 2 solution and location, Heatwrap is also fitted to outside of home made filter box that can just be seen. Inner wing also modified so cool air can be sucked in.
