Stopping the infamous driver's side leak

Well after yesterday I'm even more determined to get my car sorted. Shipped the Mrs off to have dinner with her Mum and I have a few hours to spend on the car.

I've decided to investigate the leak as the driver's footwell keeps filling up with water. I don't have any carpets at the moment but would like to put one in again at some point so I want to fix the leaks.

After finding a load of expanding foam next to the fusebox I ripped it all out and found that the bonnet pull cable grommet is totally knackered. Looks like someone couldn't be bothered to fix it and just filled it with expanding foam (which isn't waterproof).

Looking at it, I don't know how I'd get another grommet onto the cable. Even if I did, it still looks like that area would fill with water which isn't good.

So, what's the fix for filling the hole? New grommet? Fill the hole (could be difficult to get a good seal?)?

And once the hole is filled, what can be done about the area filling with water? Anything?

    All advice appreciated as always

New grommet fitted by feeding on from the pull end, parcel shelf out and 2 screws hidden behind trim, remove handle, pull cable out above fusebox. Clean the whole area up so the grommet seats properly, I smeared a little silicon sealant onto the grom and round the hole before reinstating it.. then fed the cable back through from above with some wd40 to help it otherwise it would pull the grommet through the hole, bit of a fiddle.
The area should drain out through a hole towards the wing. this is probably filled with foam so the guy who did it probably made things worse.

I've just fitted a new cable to mine, the grommet didn't seem too bad and I managed to get it fitting back in its seat properly. I'm not sure if thats the drain hole, will have a quick look at mine now.

Yes I'd say thats the drain hole. Its at the lowest part and its the only hole there. Quite where it goes to after that, I dont know.

Mine looks like a slot, goes sideways towards the front wing (kind of towards the side repeater?) it goes through into the space behind the wheelarch liner I think. Its about 10mm high and 20mm long at a guess.

Sounds about right. Feels like there's a load of foam in there too, not sure how I'm going to clear that out!

                Coat hanger wire?

Maybe take the arch liner out and have a peek.
