    Peter,
    In that your RS2 has the original wires to your ISO connectors I wondered if you could tell me which coloured wire is the illumination one, going to pin 6?
    The wiring on my RS2 has been butchered in the past when someone stole the radio about 5yrs ago. According to the paperwork I have it was then rewired by Scotts Audi when the fitted the head unit that was in the car when I purchased it. Although they refitted the correct ISO connectors, they did not fit the illumination wire, so I wondered which colour wire it was from the original loom? Looking at it I am surpised how thin the wires in the original loom are and can see why some people take a power supply back to the fusebox if they are into ICE. In the original loom wiring the wires are red (permanant 12V), brown (battery -ve), white (control +ve for aerial) and then there is a grey and blue wire which I guess is illumination, but could you confirm that please, or tell me otherwise.
    In fact the wiring repair that was done by Scotts is generally pretty poor, so I am planning to redo it all anyway. Interestingly they had spliced a wire to connect pin 7 (battery +ve) to pin 4 which overcomes the problems that you were experiencing. At least it does work!
    I have been toying with the idea of fitting an Audi Chorus 2 headunit, but that requires the use of an amp as it only has pre-outs for the rear speakers. Also I would have to adjust the unit slightly - it is 22cm wide, where as the maximum width of the centre console is 21cm
    Anyway the original RS2 wiring should go something like this:
    What I want to acheive is the factory fit look and I picked up the Audi head unit off my brother for nothing who upgraded the system in his wife's A2. My other option is to fit a VW Gamma unit which I also have knocking around the garage, this has nice red illumination on all the buttons, with just the display being blue.
    The connections for the Gamma unit on connector III is pin 1 Gala (speed sensor), pin 2 MUTE, pin 3 K-Bus (to ECU to remember code when battery disconnected), pin 4 switched positive, pin 5 control +ve for aerial, pin 6 illumination, pin 7 battery +ve, pin 8 battery -ve.

      Glyn,
      Yes the grey wire with blue trace is for illumination dimming.

        Im gonna get the wiring out on my stereo again tomorrow because the radio reception has always been crap and i think it may be down to this wiring. Ive just had a read through this thread and at present I have the brown connector for 4 speakers and black connector with pins 5,6,7,8 connected. Will check the colours tomorrow. Also there is a seperate cable with a brown connector, what is that for?

              Im assuming

              pin 5 - antenna
              pin 6 - illumination
              pin 7 - battery +ve (meant to be switched +ve for ISO)
              pin 8 - ground

              So the seperate brown connector could be the switched +ve that the stock connector is missing.

                  None of which call out a brown connector. But I see T8b or T8c might be it. Looks common to all options...

                    Its T8b

                    1 = white / blue for vehicle speed (GALA)
                    2 =
                    3 =
                    4 =
                    5 = white to aerial, buzzer and/or autocheck - pretty sure its 12V output from radio to power aerial amp and this activates alarm when key removed
                    6 = grey/blue for illumination (via E20 rheostat)
                    7 = red/blue for permanent 12V input via Fuse 4
                    8 = brown for 0V ground

                      You *******

                      Ive just spent the last half an hour working that out.

                      Looks bang on - its a black 8 pin connector i have with pins 5-8 connected, no speed sensor at pin 1 though - this could be the additional plug that i have. Ill look at the wire colours to determine tomorrow.

                            Just been changing the head unit on mine again and checked the wiring colours. The odd cable on its own is Brown/Grey with a brown connector also. Been trying to find the black aerial amp lead too but to no avail and with the weather the way it is today i didnt want to have the door open in the rain really, so may buy a new aerial with the power integrated into the coax lead since I already have an adaptor for it. Any suggestions on which aerial bases are suitable?
