      dean,

when you take a look under the car if the wishbone is total solid and cast then that is one type. the other is pressed steel and you can see the sheet edges and the form they have been pressed into.

@Jamo: Yes there the pressed steel/stamped version.

@caterpillar: Are you sure there is alloy versions? Which car were they fitted to?

                      Pics of cast version below...

                        Yes Jamo....

IMHO the cast ones are preferred over the stamped/pressed steel ones that are only spot welded together, ESPECIALLY if you intend on using non oem control arm bushings (have personally seen two of the stamped/pressed ones fail with Delrin bushings, not pretty)

Also the previous owner of my red CQ (quattro 7a motor) had the stamped passenger control arm fail by the lower ball joint - result was that the passenger front drive shaft was pulled out of the transmission and the passenger front fender was damaged by the wheel also....granted the car has 275,000 miles on it....

My two pfennigs of opinion and experience

and btw, the pressed steel ones ARE NOT the same as those on a type 85...the ones for the Coupe/S2 have three bolt ball joints as shown above...not the two bolt as the type 85...
