I'm saying i've been in cars with Koni shocks and alloy mounts and Bilstein shock and alloy mounts, the Bilsteins are harsher with the alloy mounts yet the konis there doesn't seem to be a difference in ride quality.

I know one member took them out who was running Bilstein for the same reason, i didnt believe until i actually got in 3 cars with the same setup and it's way better.

I need to take a ride in Fatty's car with OEM springs, and top mounts with Bilstein shockers to confirm once and for all that the ride quality is different.

Bilsteins are air assited so don't need stiff springs. I have them in my ur and its a stiff as hell on stock springs. I thnk the alloy top mounts must be great for a track car but could be a bit too harsh for the roads (and the roads are pretty bad these days eh?) My s2 has stock springs and Konis, RS2 and Whiteline ARBs and is just right IMO for the road.

Stiff springs and or shocks will wear out the stock top mounts quicker by transmitting more bump to them.

Tina, I'd say your top mount is loose anyway.

                          Billman,

I have an Avant and have got a set of Bilsteins waiting to go on it. They cost me 400 GBP. You have to use S2 coupe front shocks and B5 S4 rear shocks. The rears need modifying though.

MaRS2 started a thread on using Bilsteins on his RS2 and I have got the same ones he ordered. Part numbers are in the thread.

It seems that there is a point being missed completely here:

The knocking will be caused by an object impacting another object as they move towards each other (eg top mount hitting against the tower, or strut top in the top mount).

If all the bits which are meant to be rigidly attached to each other, actually are rigidly attached, there will not be any knocking. Yes, the ride might be more harsh or less harsh depending on the setup you use, because there will be transmission of loads into the chassis structure, but none of the setups should "knock" unless there is free play and backlash between parts where there shouldn't be.

Check everything is tightened up before throwing parts into a box and reverting to a setup that may not prove to be the ideal solution.
