  • Wheel bearing installation question

I have one of my new wheel bearings pressed into its carrier but have hit a question. My notes are these hubs did not have circlips fitted (which are a useful stop for the bearing) on the inboard side, but I don't have any decent photos of the original installation position... well none I can find so far.

I know from old notes that I am looking for about 1-2mm clearance from the back of the hub to the carrier when it is pressed into the bearing, but I don't want to press the new bearing too far into the carrier. Does anybody any good pics of original bearing installation positions ?

If it's the same as on a 20vCQ ??......I pressed the bearing in until it stopped......and had no problems on reassembling.

Hi Paul, I did the same as John on my old rs2 and s2 no issues.

Press the bearing into the carrier until it bottoms out. Use an outer race from an old bearing to press against, if you try to press it in with the inner race you will damage the new bearing.

Then press the hub into the bearing until it bottoms out. Support the back side of the bearing by the inner race or you will split the bearing in two.

Cheers all - just did some measurements and the only way to get all 37mm depth of coverage on the outer bearing surface is to bottom it out as all suggested here. Done one and looking good. I used a 74mm drift on the rear bearing so I think thats close enough - good tip on reusing the old bearing shell as a drift though. I tell you they are a lot easier to press in than they are out - all went with a helluva crack.

If they are factory original they can be stuck real tight, but will come out like butter if you need to do them again.

All done - the fronts took a few attempts to get centred properly - no drama. Thanks for the confidence check ! Now just the boring job of finishing to paint them, slide in the refurbed hubs and tick one more box of tasks done - thats one more than all of last year !

One of mine wasnt 100% home and it wouldn't bolt up so i had to go back to the shop and get them to finish the job.

I've got your strut tool here btw, if you'dlike it back? I dropped you a PM ages ago
