  • Powersteering spraying out of crosshead bolt

Hey guys, the s2 broke down again and it seems powersteering fluid was spraying everywhere from this position in the picture with engine on. I seem to remember this part seaping before, so i replaced the o ring here. The o rings were from ebay. Is there an issue with this? Or a specialist part? Or something else. The engine seemed to be running hot. Around 115 degrees. But that could be a different issue. Incase its heating that seal too much.

What do you guys think or know?

Overheating is unrelated to the leak, which is cured with new o-ring and refit normally -are you sure it isn't the connection above it? There are two copper/aluminium crush washers either side of the fitting and they should be replaced if you disturb it or they may leak. Equally, that hose is not facory, it has a steel hydraulic fitting clamped to it, is that leaking?

115C and you are in the territory of damaging the engine to the point of requiring a rebuild -is the fan working? Has it got coolant? How do you know it is 115C?

Yeah, the overheating is totally unrelated, 115C is too high for normal running temperature, you want to between 90 and 100 most of the time and normally bang on 90 on the gauge if your just cruising around. Check your cooling system is functioning correctly as mentioned above

Though I did briefly see 130C! on the oil temp gauge in my 3B twice, how hot that actually was I obviously don't know as the gauges are only so accurate, I do know I was very worried and total shut things down to low rpm's straight away. The engine was fine however, which shows how strong these motor's are but I wouldn't have fancied it's chance for any more stick than I gave it.

Anyway, with the turbo the under bonnet temps can get extremally high so everything is designed to cope.

If it's not one of those other joints leaking then it's the cross head plug, which will require a new O-ring kit as well as crush washers, and the correct socket to change. You can use a very large flat head screw driver but risk chewing the head.

Give the area a good clean then check often to see where the oil is actually coming from, you may even find you have more than one leak.

Quite common if thrashing my 7A, or cruising at 100. Certainly Castle Combe when I first had it was well up there after 6 laps.

Glad to know that's actually pretty normal then.

Yep, nothing to worry about, I just change my oil & filter every ~3K to make sure.

Hey Rikki!! I think you are bang on!! its spraying from this location. What is TPS? can you place a link here and reveal what that is please?

                Thank you.

To the others yes I thrash the car when warm a little. Will have to inspect further on the cooling. it reads on the guage to the 1st of the 2 dots on the temp guage. But that is max temp and comes about by driving hard, or when stuck in slow traffic. Yes the fan comes on.

If you want your power steering pump to be problem free.... best to buy the kit with the cap and O rings as replacing the O rings only in my experience does not last long before leaking again

I think the temp. you´re getting is normal and due to a replacement MFTS that tend to read higher on the instrument, mine gets up there often as you described and the first sped fan comes on for a few seconds, all normal, with the original MFTS that reading was always lower, it isn´t or wasn´t acurate. If the fan comes on it´s all working as it should!

TPS trade parts service It's the parts arm of VW but you need a trade account to use them now

Cheers bud I'll keep this in mind but most stuff seems to be NLA with them nowadays Didn't even have a cam cover gasket kit

I have a nasty feeling those seal kit's are NLA, I've got a TPS account and can vaguely recall trying to order one with no success sometime ago, worth trying though.

What is the part number of the seal kit. I cannot find them listed in Etka.
