Right I'm fuming at the moment... Left the hubs in with the local mechanic to change after he confirms that he has a press in the workshop. He asks for £40 - I say he's having a laugh and I'm not in a hurry. I say 20 - we agree on 30 and he'll have them done by 5:30pm. Duhhhh
So I get there to find my box of hubs and parts not fitted - one side partially dismantled and the mechanic not there. I'm told to wait. In a couple of minutes, he comes out and tells me they are the wrong parts. Flabergasted I tell him that I have used the exact same setup before without problems at another garage (different S2 in England).
He then proceeds to try and demonstrate the problem by offering up the new bearing to the inner/splined part of the hub that he removed and shows me that its far too big - the hub would just rattle around with so much clearance. While he's doing this he tells me he's been a mechanic for 30 yrs and they MUST be the wrong parts... And then he says the hubs are weird cos there is no circlip. I tell him thats correct - they are an interference fit. He goes quiet for a moment - that technical term clearly confused him.
I take the bearing from him, turn it the other way and its clearly the right part when you offer it up to the hub. THEN he tells me that he didnt have the right sized press fitting to remove the outer piece from the hub carrier. Why not be honet and tell me that first instead of trying to make me look stupid about wrong parts.
Further frustrated I pickup up the box o bits, walk out the door uttering the phrase "if you want something done, do it yourself"
This is the only part of the suspension works that I offered anyone else and they phucked it up with a half-assed amateur effort. Pathetic. I'm going to call in another favour with a proper mechanic who I trust - I was hoping to not have to bother him with this as he helped me on other stuff a few times recently. He has a press and more than the required amount of brain cells to operate it.
When I got home I see that he has somehow managed to leave part of the old bearing on the hub - pheck knows how I'm getting that off. I dread to think how he got it in that state - I never done them myself but I thought the hub would have pressed out cleanly in one operation, followed by another to remove the old bearing in one piece... He has somehow dismantled/broken the old bearing.
Just the sort of old cadger that wants to rip you off and you cant rely on - what if I needed the car on the road tonight ?
Pics to follow... When I've calmed down.
