no but the gearbox will come forward= you need to make new gearbox mounts
Solid front subframe mounts, The verdict !

Thinking back to the weekend when I had the sub frame off, at least one of the gearbox mounts (this bit that bolts to the gearbox not the bush that sits in the sub fame) had a slotted hole. Would this not allow the sub frame to move forward leaving the gear box in position ?
Engine is not bolted to the sub frame so is unaffected.

Thats right rich, there are two holes in the offset bushes and the smaller offset ones can be fitted using the 'slack' in the stock mounts. the larger offset setting requires modification, or in my case the removal of the dual mass flywheel and using single mass and thus loosing the gearbox spacer (although my car never had those, the car i stole the gearbox off did)
i recon i have gained between 50% and 80% more caster as a result but cannot be sure until i have it alighned again which may be a few months yet.

That doesn't make sense as the gearbox doesn't move when you go from dual to single mass, it's the engine that moves back on the slotted mounts btdtThats right rich, there are two holes in the offset bushes and the smaller offset ones can be fitted using the 'slack' in the stock mounts. the larger offset setting requires modification, or in my case the removal of the dual mass flywheel and using single mass and thus loosing the gearbox spacer (although my car never had those, the car i stole the gearbox off did)

same difference tho, engine moving back or gearbox moving forwards, just that the stock mounts cannot accomodate the larger of the two settings on the bushes without modification, this is just one possible modification that you can do

true, but your only talking a couple of mm, the prop can take that sort of movement, better that fabricating custom gearbox mounts IMHO. i think if we want to continue this we should start a new topic tho.....sorry for the hyjack.....

The slotted holes in the gearbox mounts allow the sub fame to move forward whilst the box and engine remain stationary.
Switching to single mass and removing the spacer is a different story the gearbox would go forward or the engine backward.
I agree with the Jamsta that the box going back cant in theory be good for the prop unless there is sufficient "give" in the prop.
Have I got this right ?

basically there are two degrees of 'offset' on the 034 bushes, the first setting is fine with no mods, the second setting needs modification, i happened to be doing a single mass flywheel at the same time and this offered sufficient 'modification' to allow the mounts to fit, the prop has sufficient play for this to work. although i was by no means sugesting that moving the gearbox is better in all senarios, if stock mounts are used then moving the engine back is better. this is just one possible modification that can be done in order to get the 034 'offset' mounts to fit.

Ok, just wondering now about offset mounts 50%/80% more caster would transform these cars
Another thing on the wish list :mischeif:

thats the paln
although 50/80% is a VERY rough guess just from looking a the angle of the strut....

Thats 5 or 8 degrees?? or really 50-80 percent more castor?
This is pretty interesting.Comment

well before i fittem them i never notices much camber gain on turning and caster by eye looked small, there is now a significant increase and i can see the camber gain when i turn the wheel, not merc levels or anything like that but there is more, stock on my car is about 1.5 degrees, at a total guess i would say it is around 2.2-2.8 degrees, my car is very low tho which will make a difference. i hear the stock S2 is 2.5 tho, not sure what the difference is......
