    Top mounts, where to buy???

    Chaps,

Konis have arrived and now need to get some top mounts to finish the job properly. Want genuine ones as I've only had problems with cheap aftermarket ones in the past. Where did people get theirs from (mail order) and how much were they, both green and blue.

    Cheers

I was desperate for some top mounts today and bought some from GSF for less than a tenner each plus VAT: I nearly fell over when I was told the price. Part number is 8A0 412 323D [with a 7RL suffix] as fitted to the RS2 as stock (green). I have tried both and can't see an advantage in the blue ones personally. Stiffer? Doubt it (definately not noticable). Longer lasting? not from my experience...both lasted the same.

Room for a significant design improvement methinks. Big brakes used hard really punish the topmounts and I am interested in the spherical bearing ones mentioned previously by Stevef.

Its QRSport on that number. Tim and Jan have just developed rose jointed top mounts for the 80/90 s2 etc. I saw these in the flesh the other week pre-production ones and they are the absolute top bolx. Tims fitted them to his s2 avant and i noticed a vast difference over last time i was in it.
Ill try and get some pics if anyones interested. These are superb!

Thanks for the info and links. VERY useful. Have just ordered 4 green ones from VAG parts for about £70 delivered. Noticed lots of RS2 stuff and HID kit... Christmas list is expanding rapidly!

Disagree strongly with blue top mount vs. green. On several quattros I have owned or modified for customers, the blue is far superior. Blue mounts improve steering feel, steering response and general roadholding. Oh, and they do last at least twice as long. On a hard driven old 80 quattro belonging to a customer, he had gone through several sets of OE green top mounts - each lasting about 6 months in his car. We replaced them with blue top mounts 2 years ago and they are still like new.

I haven't found the blues to last any longer than the greens: blues lasted no time at all when punished. Are you suggesting that the rubber in the green ones are more compliant than the blues? The total thickness of elastomer around the steel insert in both bushes is minimal and any Shore difference is very hard to sense by hand. I can't see how the bearing setup is different either having had both side by side.

Either way, both Greens and Blues are crap on an S2 with decent brakes. Don't forget that the Quattro is a lighter car with equally naff brakes so is unlikely to give the mounts as hard a time as the S2/RS2 with good stoppers and big grip increases over stock. Both types fail on me just as frequently with no noticable difference.

I'll have to side with Lee on this one. I've used both blue and green in my Avant and while the blue may initially give a better feel it is not long before improvement has gone. Neither type have last more than 4-6 months.

I'd like to think I'm not quite as brutal as Lee and my 993TT brakes are not in the same league as the monsters hiding behind his wheels but I do drive 300+ miles a week so the suspension gets quite a workout.

I wonder if it's only Avants that suffer from premature failure? You don't often hear complaints from Coupe owners.

Have a feeling my blues have disintegrated too. Suspension nowhere near as sharp now. I've got similar brakes to Lee but don't think I punish them as hard, so bit disappointed with the top mounts on mine. Lasted less than a year
