H&R spring worn

Well after a full hour on the ramp shacking, rocking, levering and prodding every bush and mount on the front of the Avant the problem has been identified:

It would appear the occasional loud knock from the front near side is the H&R spring coming unseated.

When the car is jacked at the front with no weight on the wheels the near side spring can be rotated easily where as the off side spring is difficult to rotate, guess which side the knock comes from

Anybody else experienced worn H&R?

Anybody selling any KW's? Christmas present to self

not been accidentally fitted upside down? got a knock myself from the O/S after going back to stock springs. Coincidentally i am refitting the HR's but just thought id throw it out there as I only found this out recently

I was just reading the thread regarding orientation Andy, I would appear they may be up side down since 2006! going to check that tomorrow. I'm also going to swap them over left/right: visa/versa see if the knocking moves.

H&R springs
Koni adjustable, setting 1
Pro-mount top mounts
Poly wishbone bushes
solid sub frame bushes

haha would make me chuckle if it was! my hr's were perfect before i removed, wish i never did- the ride on stock springs is somehow worse but thats a whole other topic!
My current knock on the O/S sounds like a sort of twang/ping sort of knock noise. What sort of knock is yours?

It's a short sudden snap sound, non technical passengers notice it

Don't do it all the time, you have to do the exact secret combination fo turning/breaking/accelerating for it to occur.

check the top of your strut perch, it might be to close to the spring.





the last two coil might sit in it, but once you go over something it snaps out.
I had to open the top a bit and I put a piece of garden hose also, as a silencer.

Good idea using hose pipe, the Eibachs I got for my MK2 Golf came with a clear hose covering the the bottom three or four coils presumably for that reason.

A quick update guys:

Removed springs, swapped side to side and left to right. Tight wound section now at top. Noise appears to have disappeared during limited testing. More results to follow.

Update on mine.....I removed the spring that the noise was coming from and found out it was upside down ! Fitted my h and r springs taking care to get the right ends up and now there is no noise whatsoever ! Il add pics later so others can tell which is top and bottom
