What sort of tap do I need to make sure I use/ buy?!

How do I take the hub off by the way?

if that fails and you have to increase the tap size to M16 you could get an engineering company to turn you a stud with M16 on one side and M14 on the other so you dont have to drill the wheel to take a bigger stud and you can still use the nut that you took off it

This was going to be my suggestion....... that way you will have gone almost all the way thru so will have a definite true line of where the thread should be and might save it for you.

Well I'm gonna give it a go tomorrow,

Might call All Audi and see if they've got a spare hub just in case!

If you are taking the hub out, buy a new bearing as well

Mike, do you know or is there a how-to on your site for renewing the wheel bearing?

Wheel bearing removal/refitting needs to be done with the correct tools, press etc. You'll need to have it done for you, it's not really a DIY job..

It's not bad at all. As long as your other 4 nuts are torqued properly, then you are fine. One time, I was at a track event, and i couldn't find 1 of the 20 conical bolts for my racing wheels. the race officials said it was cool...and i ran it without problems.
proper thread for the hubs is 14x1.5mm.

Getting the hub carrier of the car is OK for the experienced DIY mechanic, but as Steve says - removing the actual hub requires a proper hydraulic press...

Once the hub is removed it can be machined to correct the damaged thread (or renewed worst case).

Of course a new bearing is required to be press fitted into the hub.

It might also be wise to buy a new bottom balljoint as these can be damaged when removing the original hub carrier... My top tip to minimise the risk of that is to loosen both wishbone bush bolts and disconnect the ARB so that when you trying to wriggle/wallop the bottom joint out of the hub carrier that nothing else is working against the direction you want it to go.

Hope that makes sense. Its another one of those 'How To...' jobs that I wish I had time to write up properly with pics etc etc

I've decided to book it in to my friendly garage - they're looking at it today, here's hoping for an easy resolution.

Very good news indeed. Have also just installed a new rear caliper and tightened up the handbrake cable, so feeling good about the car, hooray! Now it's back to all those other little niggly little jobs, like fixing the rear windscreen wiper, and getting the RS2 hardlines...

                                Great news!
So there are a couple of lessons in this:

                                1) Don't get too excited if there is a problem, because the solution may be a lot simpler than you think.

                                2) Use Loctite to fit studs in hubs!
