Getting the old ones out is another matter

thanks for the reply, i think i worded it wrong. i meant what size allen socket do i need to undo it?

I am expecting it to be a nightmare, they probably havent been undone for years.

Ok, not sure. I had a drain plug socket that fitted. I will check for you tomorrow.
The side plug was very rusty. I soaked it overnight in WD40. It came off easily with the rattle gun.
The bottom plug was not so rust. It was also soaked overnight, heated up, frozen, wire brushed, heated up again, but it wont budge! The internals have started to round off so I'm thinking of either drilling the centre out and collapsing the threads or welding something into it to use to unscrew it. The third option is to just drain/refill using the side plug. Its off the car and on the workbench. If I go for option three, it won't be too easy next time around!
Good luck with yours. Still on the car? Soak it all in WD40 for at least 12 hours.

            Ok, good luck then.
There is a thread on here I was reading last week about this job. These plugs are well known for seizing solid. Because the dif is apparently filled for life, it goes for years and years before anyone tries to remove the plugs.
Might be a good idea to order some new ones before you start?

Woohoo! I love welding things to seized bolts - never failed me yet, you can't beat a bit of instant heat shock.

When trying to remove the drain plug yesterday, it just rounded. So got a friend to weld a socket to it an it finally budged, after snapping the weld 2 times.
I drained the oil an i would say only about 500ml came out. So much for not checking gear oils.
