    Well well...

    S2 coupe owners:

Rear diff housing shared between Audi V8 (Actually not true as Caterpilar states below - 100/200 and C4 generation shares housing, V8 is specific BUT it uses the same internals and the housings are very very similar!) and S2. No difference in ring/pinion ratio, 4.11:1 in both --> If you want a Torsen in the back, just buy a complete rear diffhousing and bolt it on your coupe..

    S2 Sedan/Avant

Tricky. Buy the diff, bolt your crown wheel on the V8 diff, mount in your housing --> 4.11:1 gearing, crown and pinion gears match up --> good to go...

I had a chat with this swedish guy rallying a 80 GTE Quattro. According to him, a lim slip (generally) will make the car more rear ward biased (meaning it will be more tail happy). Fit a rear limslip AND a front limslip and you will be back where you started as far as dynamic balance of the car. Now, ofcourse you will be transfering more power to the ground... Which is fine and dandy for a pro but basically, for an amateur also makes the car harder to drive as it will be even more prone to understeer than before fitting a front lsd. Now - as I said, advanced drivers will work this out and will be even faster but for an amateur a rear lsd will do the trick.

Understeer is safer than oversteer... Audi has won like a zillion awards for safety. Audi understeers. The setup of the susp is for understeer, understeer, understeer.... So, with a little tweaking you can get the car to be so nervous you won't be able to drive it in a straight line without the back of the car wanting to drive past the front. So for me, I'm aming at a V8 diff and that'll do the trick I hope.

Audi's and Passat's with Torsen systems can be quite a handful to drive, but they are rewarding once you get the hang of it. I think a rear LSD would please most of us.

Now - ATB vs Torsen? Well, the ATB can be shimmed to change the characteristics of it whilst the Torsen can't. The ATB relys on inner friction (friction in gears and between gears and housing) whilst the Torsen relys on friction between the gears only.

At least this is what I came up with when I looked around. www.exist.ru is a useful tool when trying to see what fits where - it's a russion page - than god for babelfish. The site seems to be down at the moment, possibly 'cause they were forced to close it by Audi...

With the V8 rear diff can we lock it like the S2's ?

      @henka
I dont understa what are you saying about the S2 avant's! Will the V8 fit right away? What must be modifyed?

Grate news ! Can You post a year date frame that this rear diffhousing was put to V8. Posibly a part number of the rear diff form Audi/ETKA ? So we would know what to look for in the junk yard

No, if you want to be able to lock it you will have to machine the correct splines on the left side of the V8-diff to accomodate the S2 locking mechanism. It can be done but is there a real need for that with a limslip? I like to have it lockable but I'm not sure I'd ever use it.

Yes, the differential will fit right on. You use the V8-diff and the gearing from your car. Remember to check back-lash so that is is withing spec's.

Had the Coupe and Sedan/Avant shared the rear axle housing you could have just switched the whole thing - now you have to dig into your own gearing and so on and shim it upp again. Here in Sweden you can't just buy the diff (well if you buy it new but V8's are quite common at salvage yards), I'd have to buy the whole axlehousing and this means I'll end up with a whole bunch of stuff I can't sell to someone else! Sorry, I was a bit...unfocused there for a while.

I'm using my car basicy for dragracing/streetracing. I have used my rear diff lock up to now. But now I'm thinking of geting a V8 rear diff or ATB one. Will the one from V8 make less HP power transfered to wheels form the HP on flywheel or it does not matter ? Another words if V8 or ATB rear lsd will be use I will lose some more HP from the flywheel ? If Yes which with with one I will lose less HP on the wheels ?

Please give us a part number or year of the V8 rear diff for the Coupe.

              What a great news!!

THE housing you may look for are the AFV and AXZ they have thorsen diff.... FROM audi v8 from 89-94....pnr: 017525021H and 017525021Q but the housing does NOT have the unit outside for locking the diff ... the diffhousing are very similar like audi 100/200 and for the v8 types....i didn't know that the parts from the a100/200/v8 was interchangeable to the small/short diffhousing BUT I'M LEARNING,I'M LEARNING

Well, I can't honestly say. You know, when traveling in a straight line everything in the diff has the same relative speed so power loss should be equal. However, as soon as one wheel starts to slip it's a different story - sorry, I can't say if there is a difference but the real life difference between them is suppsoed to be that you can adjust the ATB by shimming it.

A spool is the best way to ensure that you always have the same exact speed at both wheels but it will be a nightmare to drive when cornering -so that will make the car "useless" as a daily driver...

@Spanish - I don't have the P/N but any V8 will fit. However, at the introduction of the 4.2l the p/n for the diff changed. Now, this usually means that they either put in a stronger version (still it will fit since it uses the same bearings and gears!) or just beefed up the existing one (surface treating on gears, surface treating on diff housing or just a whole new set of gears etc.). Now this makes sense since the 4.2 has a larger torque output.

the parts are the same as your car...... use the pnr in last topic, and chim it right . ready to go.... all the partnr are the same in the rear diff, but you have the other housing and a extra propaxel innside.. i've checked in etka....the bearings are the same tooo

Basically just the V8 differential. You will not be able to lock it unless you machine the left side of the diff to fit with the locking mechanism of the RS2.

Well it's not really a freebie mod... That's why I was talking about the salvage yard deal - if you own a coupe it's ok - a coupe rear axle is ok to sell but no one buys an empty V8 rear axle housing.

Spanish - I'll have to get bakc to you later about P/N's if no one else can clear it out - I thought Caterpillar did that already but OK.
