This is a good read and apparently the torsen diff is a torque mulitplier, so if you have zero torque and multiply it, you still get zero!

BMW used this quattro weakness to try and prove thier xDrive superior. Kinda pointless though as even on ice you still have some torque resistance, so torsen works just fine!

Just try and keep all 4 on the ground.....

Yep, looks like they've gotten around this problem by combining torsen with an LSD

I had this with a type 85 quattro, basically the guy who did some work had used the wrong nut/bolt for the strut to hub on the drivers side. The strut popped out of the wishbone and pulled the driveshaft apart, do what we did was put the strut/wishbone together tied up the driveshaft and locked both diffs on that so I could drive it home.

Was ok till it wore thru the brake hose but I was pulling into the garage and was a good excuse for braided hoses

I am learning more about these cars every day,but as its my car that has the problem
I want to be sure that no other damage has been done.
Let me start by saying the damage was caused buy a spirited standing stardust nothing like a 4k launch,or anything like it,no more than any of you do on any given day.
So why do you think this has happened, car is standard, well looked after ,full service history, may be driven hard sometimes, but never used on track, clutch is new, 180000mls on the clock.and boost is a little low,cv boot was intact and plenty of grease in it.
There must be loads of you with big power running through the same component, and pulling much more aggressive starts with no problem.
When I get a chance I will clean the offending part and post a picture.
I am beginning to wonder with the mileage these cars are now reaching if we will see more of this kind of failure whether this was just a defective part waiting to fail.
Please let me know what you think. Thank you for your comments so far

            Many thanks Lou

Every day is a school day then... It was Paschen's law last week and this week its an insight on the subtle difference between an LSD and an ATB. The pure Torsen works like an LSD except in these corner cases where it can be fooled. Very weird, but informative nonetheless - guess it also explains rather nicely why you never hear about Torsens exploding during a brake test on two-wheel rollers at the MOT !

Very old thread, but can unfortunately concur that this can happen. On a spirited start ~ 3k drop, hard left turn (USA LHD) and I also stripped my right inner rear drive shaft ribs and had no power. I though it was the clutch, and at the time didn't think of trying the diff lock. When I went in for repairs, that got me here. How could I have no power on AWD when only one wheel was "slipping" . Smart but not smart enough to figure out LSD & torsen inter-workings. Would've thought I should've gotten something to the front wheels, but didn't. Is that maybe why the diff lock is really there, in case you have the parking lot, ice under one wheel situation??

I had a similar problem on my '85 90Q saloon. Long drive home to Oxford from Brstol one night, stopped at the first set of lights off the motorway and heard a tinkle, tinkle sound. Got out to have a look and a load of cvt balls on the ground, must have been held in place by centrifugal force etc. Anyway, boot failure, ran out of lube, joint disintegrated, but the drive shaft is captive in the joint, balls or not, so engaged diff lock and drove gently home. Moral of the story: Audi Quattro, the car that always gets you home :-). Should be an easy fix anyway...
