    er is the torsen diff! and wtf is the damn bearing.
    Just looked on Ekta and the 6 speed doesnt appear to use the same type of bearing. Its a 5 speed thang. Stupid 3B's

    @Beetie, er hope so!! LOL

        Whats wrong with the torsen and the bearing mate?

        I can see it now, Tom rebuilds his gearbox from memory cos he can't get hold of any instruction documents, refits it to the car and wonders why he has a few cogs left over. LOL! I guess if you don't refit that 'damn bearing' it won't fail on you again!!

            Nothing wrong with the Torsen, just looks a very complicated device
            That is THE bearing that has failed me twice.

            Oh and the hammer was found just inside the bellhousing. Must have left that in there from the last time. LMAO

              Only 8 balls in that race, are you sure its the right one? Did the last guy in there put a cheap one in? Doesn't look like a high load ball race to me. More like something you'd find in an electric drill..
              Could be wrong..

                If you want to look at the possibilities of an upgraded bearing let me have the dimensions and I'll check some suppliers round here. Sheffield still has lots of bearing places where you can get all sorts of wierd and wonderful stuff.

                  That is the OE bearing, bought from an Audi dealer. When i looked at it didnt look like enough balls to take large loads. If I can get a bearing of same size but stronger then what will it wear out next?? Will that be as cheap as the £10 gen. bearing??

                      I could do, but i have no preload settings for the diff or the shafts
                      This is a bearing that can be replaced without altering the preloads. Hence I can do it without any info. Sorry dude! BTW, i have noticed that the first gear syncro is very slighty weak. Doesnt grate but has a bit of a notch to it. Dont think mine is like that, cant remember now.

                        Not sure on prices but if they are non-weird sizes then they shouldn't be that much, maybe we could source one with more bearings or even a roller needle bearing - not sure if that would be suitable though

                            You've broken Steve's box already?!? You've only had it a week! LOL!

                            Yes, you can improve the strength of a bearing by changing the ball complement, changing bearing and ball materials for something like 52100 steel, special coatings like TiN or DLC (Diamond-like carbon = MEGA MEGA BUCKS!) on bearing and race surfaces as well as chosing a higher ABEC number (precision achieved through 'grading' every bearing produced). Changing ball complement requires a different cage but these can be custom made from phenolic or bronze. Easy dude! How strong do you want it and how much do you want to spend?

                            Lee

                            PS Torsen works very much the same way as Quaife's ATB (automatic torque biasing) differential. Fantastic piece of passive torque biasing in a relatively simple package. There should be write up on how it works on the Quaif site although I do have an article from the early '90's from "Car Design and Technology" magazine if you really want to be a boffin on ATBs and Torsens!!

                              25x58x16 will be a standard bearing offered by many companies like SKF, SNFA, Timken, FAG etc Should not be a problem to get something special knocked up to suit your budget.
