    Racing gearbox

    Hi All!

Our racing team is prepared 2.2t S4 for 1000-km race. Engine specs are near 450Hp and 650Nm.
Circuit is not very difficult, for 1 lap there are 20-22 shifts, total 335 laps

What kind the way of gearbox preparation for that is more effectively? Is oil pump nessesary? May be more changings?

What clutches will be effectively and reliably, 1,2,3-disks? Ceramic, carbon, original strengthened?

    Tnx, YanRS

    Hi Yan

I would suggest that you have the gearbox rebuilt, have all of the gears checked for excess wear. I would also suggest that you replace all of the bearings to be on the safe side. Make sure that the bearings are set with the correct pre-load and clearances. Finally, make sure that you use a top quality synthetic gearbox oil otherwise all of your hard work might come to a sudden end !!!

    Good luck

We are using 6gear gearbox with oil pump and wide 1st gear. Tilton 2 disk clutch 7,25" diameter, but it ain't relieving gearbox job. It's suggested to rebuilt gearbox after every such 1000km race if you want to go to the finish on the next race. We had failures with release bearing, so now it's also Tilton hydraulic release bearing.

by the way what tyres will you use with such engine specs on 1000km race? and what weight of the car?

              nervas, is it your car?
We will be take part in Latvian Horn Gran Prix 2005 on S4 2.2 turbo.

We planning use Yokohama AVS Sport V102 by 245/40/17 size. Slicks is too risky without knowledge of a track. Car weight is 1350 kg.
We are ready to rebuild gearbox each race or training, thanks for advices. But there are some qustions:
              1. What part number of Tilton clutch and hydraulic release bearing? What kind of modernization or improvement is required for these installation?
              2. What price for complete Tilton`s kit?
              3. Is wide 1st gear from tdi gearbox 26mm?

              See you in the Race

yes that's mine. There will be Lithuanian Horn Gran Prix, not Latvian , so we will meet in Palanga (just that I will be spectator). There will aslo be Audi S2 Coupe

be careful with Tyre choise, because that you can loose about 10-15sec a lap with street tyres, there are 2 brake zones after long straight from ~240-260km/h. I suggest you to buy Ferodo DS3000 Endurance brake pads, because car is heavy.

Our gearobox is from V8, not from TDI.
To fit Tilton we have made custom flywheel. Release bearing part nr. is 61-802, disks nr. 66-002UGG, It's OT-II 7,25" (185mm) for Audi. The whole kit is about 1000Eur(whitout flywheel)

                  nervas, great thanks for info.

                  Some quistion yet: what
                  1. What tires did you use in race? And how set of tires were necessary for all distance?
                  2. Flywheel. Was it your own development? Or can I buy this item in Lithuanian?
                  3. Can You inform me about points of feeding oil lines to gearbox for orginize gearbox oil cooling?

May be we discuss that by the phone if you speak russian, or in that forum on russian language? http://www.autoreklama.lv/forum/inde...opic=981&st=25

                  Yours faithfully, Yan.

                      Yours faithfully, Yan.
We used street tyres, so no more street tyres in racing I can give you contact for Dunlop slick tyres, they are in Estonia and they can offer you good price and right compound for endurance race.
Flywheel was our development, can't buy such anywhere.
As for gearbox cooling, we got everything in HansaFlex.
