    Hello from Toronto

    Hi everyone!
Ok, technically I don't have an S2 as we never got them here. But I just bought a coupe with what is supposed to be an S4 engine. I'm planning to do the best I can to turn it in to an S2 "replica".

Quick question while I'm here. How do I determine what engine is in the car? I bought it with a turbo engine already installed. But I am stumped as to whether it is an AAN or 7A or what. It has the "correct" S2 intake and exhaust manifolds from what I've learned on here and internet searches.

Thanks and I look forward to having a lot of fun here!

    Hi Nick,

Do you have any pictures of the engine bay and engine? If you do, you will soon have the answers to your question re engine type. The designation for the head, at least is on a flat section of the head casting at the top, front uppermost corner on the exhaust side of the head. Just below the cam cover gasket. Difficult to describe, easy to find!

A pic of the engine bay will help us to answer your questions. Your car probably came with a 7A engine which could have been replace by a 3B or AAN. Another option is an 034 turbo kit could have been added. pic, pics, pics

Was it the grey one on .kijiji? I think he advertized it as having an AAN block with
          a 3B head?

If it is that one you should be able to tell if the crank shaft pully is deigned for separate
accessory belts, alternator, PS etc. Or a serpentine belt AAN. (3B engines never came
to Canada in any Audi sold at a dealerships).

Is it running a 7A/3B type cam cover? Does it use a distributor with a single coil -
all signs you either have a 3B or 7A head. You may also be able to see AAN
stamped on the block below the head.

Good luck with your S2 build, you will need to do a bit of digging on what exactly
the previous owner was up to.

          Cheers, Mike

Wow! Fastest response ever from a forum! Thanks guys! Found the stamp in the head and it's an AAN! ...well, the head is at least I guess.
            Thats a relief.

Ok, feel free to direct me to the more relevant place to ask this next one. But I seem to have no spark. It has a distributer and there is power going to the ignitor but no spark. Is there any way to check If it's the distributer or the coil? The distributer looks to be in good shape and seems to be spinning at least. I haven't checked timing yet as I wanted to try the simple things first.

audiurq, yes it might be the one you are talking about. Unfortunately it does not run right now. He claims he drove home on a snapped serpentine belt and when he replaced it, the car wouldn't start. Seems like he knew enough that it wasn't the timing belt he was talking about and the car looked complete.

I suck at loading pics. give me a minute to figure it out...

                Got it!
Yes, she's a bit rough. But it cost less than buying just the engine here and the body isn't in terrible shape.
Got myself a nice winter project now.

First check the timing to see if the cambelt has slipped.

Find a vagcom lead and read codes.

                  Dissy means it's a 3B

                  Cam cover is 7A

Fuel rail and IM are 3B

Hard to say, has aan cam cover. has aan water manifold, aan cps sensor plug. Just because it has a 3b intake manifold, doesn't make it a 3b, just like because it has a 7a valve cover, it doesn't mean its a 7a.

It has a dizzy though, that means it probably has 3B cams.

It definitely has AAN stamped on the head. Can't see anything on the block yet.
I'll do some more reading on here and the link provided before I ask more questions.
                            Thanks!

Probably an AAN with a bunch of 3B parts on it then!
