Try giving the dash a light thump just above the cluster.

I did it but nothing happened. do you know where the signal to the tachometer comes from about the generator or the ignition coil?

Taken from G28 sensor on the side of the bell housing. Info here.

More likely damp in cluster and poor contact. Has the car been in the garage for long?
          Any mouse damage?

There are two sets of long connecting pins in the cluster that can need resoldering to the circuit board, I’ve repaired a few.

Damn, it was so easy. I had the exact same problem. I went to the workshop with this issue. They claimed that they've replaced the board, ran diagnostics and did something else. They've charged me £200.

I've got a couple of circuit boards knocking about in the house, could take a pic of one latter if John can't help, just having a quick break and a cuppa.

They’re the (25 or 30mm?) long pins that connect between the boards, they’re soldered to one board and slide into tiny individual sockets in the other board. The solder joints can go dry and things become intermittent, like the tacho or the speedo. It’s quite obvious if the joint has failed as the pin will wobble. Check the little socket too, use a dab of switch cleaner (caig de-oxit is fab) and, if you have some fine long nose pliers, you can very carefully squeeze the contacts to tighten them up a bit.

It's hard to say from looking at the picture but that does look like a broken track, have you got a multimeter to test the circuit with? If your handy with a soldering iron they can be fixed by bridging the damage with fine wire, I'm never very happy with the results of this mind you.
