    S2 values

Everyone says they are stupid cheap at the moment, but then also claim they are under valued, especially when it comes to proving to insurers that their valuation when claiming is a joke!
Why are people under valueing these very rare and collectable cars?
If owners want them to be worth a decent price, then everyone has to stick together surely?!
I beleive mine is up for sale at a resonable price considering its condition and mods.
Yes, you can go out and buy one cheap, I did that the first time and ended up spending the same again plus more getting it running right!!

I remember reading a recent thread on here about a new owner who picked one up for 2.5k or similar, and has since posted a huge list of things that need sorting out.....

You want a good example of any car you pay more right?

    Completely agree.

Although i paid more and still ended up spending a fortune replacing everything anyway

The s2 is almost 20 years old, even the youngest ones are now almost 15 years old, and as the s2 doesnt hold that classic nature in the same way as the urq for example, it inherently minimises the value to most people; and so only people that are specifically looking for an s2 will be happy to pay a higher price.

The s2 is in a pretty niche market which has a very limited audience IMO. When you factor that in with the "competition" from other manufacturers your not left with many people seriously looking at the S2, even though it makes perfect sense to us.

I agree with all of that, but just because its a small market, does that mean we have to give them away for peanuts?!

Look at the Integrale scene for example... very rare car, very rare to get parts for, and a very small audience of people that are actually prepared to go out and buy one, yet they still all hold very strong money!
I dont see why the S2 is any different

I agree with all your points dest, but until the insurance folk see the S2 as properly rare/classic then it will just continue to get rubbish valuations...

Case in point being that the UR is rightly considered to be a classic car... The S2 is much more rare, but only a small proportion of those that recognise the UR as a classic would put the S2 into the same category... That's why it doesn't have the same widespread appeal / understanding and why the street values are generally so low. On face value - it looks like an old Audi 80 with a thirsty engine and some potentially large running costs.

IMHO, the S2 is never seeked out by your ordinary average 2nd hand car buyer... Even those looking for something a bit 'old skool' or 'different' will be somewhat wary of the S2 because of the potential expenses. We S2 owners are a bit of a niche bunch of folk with the capacity / interest / enjoyment for things of a less mundane nature... I think that is generally also why this forum has been so successful as we recognise this odd old car needs the collective knowledge and mindshare to take some of the stress out of owning one !

They ARE rare... Ball park numbers are approx 11,000 URs brought into UK versus ~2000 S2.

Of course there are more rare quattros than the S2 - but without widespread recognition as a sought after classic - then they just look like another old Audi.

I think the Integrale falls into the same 'icon' category as the urq. Not sure why, as it's a fairly ugly car, but it has rally pedigree and the images of it in those Martini colours are classic

Again, I agree with all of those points Paul, but it still doesnt really justify why they are valued at next to nothing.
I can only think its the owners themselves that do not value their cars enough?!

Thats another way to look at it dest... its a tricky one though... classic chicken and egg - as how do we escalate the 'street' value of an S2 from say 5k today to 8k in the future when insurance companies will only pay out against a fraction of the 5k... makes people even more reluctant to buy them at inflated prices.

The only way to solve this is time of course, the prices cannot be increased overnight, but I do agree that if there is a general and genuine trend for all these cars to come up for sale at slightly higher values, then eventually it should be reflected in any 'book' prices - assuming of course the appeal ever breaks out beyond the niche of knowledgable Audi fanatics who might seek out an S2.

I think that enthusiast owners, many on this Forum, ask what we collectively agree is the current value for an S2 depending on mods, condition, history, work etc. etc. However, an owner who's S2 is just a car and an old, high mileage one at that, will price it according to an inaccurate trade price guide or based on the value of other Audi 80s perhaps. As corectly identified, many of these cheaper ordinary cars need a lot of work to get them up to a decent standard and that costs a lot more than the price differential. As ever, new owners think that there are bargains to be had and until they've spent £10k getting the car up to a reliable, useable standard, the wise words of us longer term enthusiast owners just wash away into the background... I wish I'd bought a sorted car instead to taking the hard route but then I wouldn't know half the stuff I do about working on the car if I hadn't rebuilt most of it at one stage or another

But its an accurate comment - you wont, for all the reasons stated above. IMO of course!

I dont think the reason for the S2 being relatively cheap, at least in my eyes, is down to people not caring enough for them. If thats the case, why dont you put yours up for £10k or whatever youd like it to sell for? Because it wont sell, youd be laughed at.

Thats exactley the same for anyone selling their s2, they are putting it up for sale for a reason and at the end of the day they want it sold.

Quite simply, i think that despite the niche market there is still to much supply (i.e S2's up for sale) for the minimal demand of people wanting to buy them.

I dont HAVE to sell mine, by doing so I get the chance to change jobs.
If it doesnt sell Im more than happy to keep it and stay in the job I have now.
Thankfully for me, a no loss situation

Sonic is bang on right here - its lesson one of the sales cycle - supply and demand... If there are ten people in the UK shopping for an S2, but thirty are for sale then its hardly a sellers market.

I was lucky enough to get £3.8k insurance settlement for my 1992 3B. Initially I was offered £850!!!!! I just argued and argued. Eventually they sent out an independant engineer to assess the value. Luckily for me he appreciated the values of 'classics'. Also the fact there was another '92 example on P/heads for sale at £4k. I was lucky though.

If I was to get another S2 (extremely unlikely - will they still be around in 18 years?) I'd happily pay more for a sorted one. There are some cracking examples now on P/heads for decent money from a buyer's and seller's viewpoint.
