nah your not stupid... I don't have an S2, I did contemplate buying one last time around but at the end of the day I just prefer the scooby. I do appreciate them however and tbh this forum is a nicer place to hang out than most

@Jamo: You're spot on about the car lacking those little bits in stock spec - and probably part of the reason why the RS2 is seen as that much better is because it has almost precisely those mods done to it.

      LMAO at this thread!

In my eyes, the answer is simple, it is down to supply and demand, multiplied by the inherent "ICON" status of the car.

Integrale's, UR's, Cossies etc, have a huge following mainly due to the motorsport acheivements of the cars during their heyday.

The S2 has none of that history behind it, and is therefore has very little recognition in the eyes of the general public, so a very limited market.

I am in no doubt the S2 is a better car in almost every way than and integrale or UR or Cossie (Escort or Sierra) but NO ONE aside from us enthusiasts knows what one is and how good it can be.

This severly limits the market so the prices remain low.

In many many years to come, when there are even less S2's about (and probably even fewer that are relatively standard) the prices MAY approach £8 - £10k. But they are still going to lag behind the RS2 (which even we agree is a more desirable car) so RS2 values will have to climb a little too for this to happen....

At the end of the day, I don't think values really matter, apart from a total loss insurance point of view. You will generally get what you pay for the car again as they don't depreciate much, and I for one did not buy one to lock it away and make money. (I know I do lock it away in the winter! )

My advice is drive them and enjoy them, just don't expect the values to climb anytime soon, I don't think we can influence it either, except by ALL agreeing not to sell for less than £8k. But then prospective buyers will go to another mark or brand!

      Cheers,

      Steve.

at the end of the day its a piece of metal and in a lot of cases a rusty piece of metal too.

who'd pay more than a few k for a rusty piece of metal?

im with steve. dont worry about the value. either enjoy it or sell it. never expect to make a profit or break even on a piece of metal.

why do people prefer other marques. better drivers cars. fact. what makes me in particular like these sub standard cars be it audi or vw - the people and the friendlyness. i remember a few scooby RR days being like 4 gangs, one on each corner.

'sub standard' - LOL - thats a bit harsh... but yes they are too heavy, understeer too much, have shyte brakes and crap lights... most of this is easily improved by spending some £££ here and there.

That said - it has the most amazing engine with regards durability and scope for upgrades. It also has an almost unbreakable drivetrain and fantastic build quality. It would be hard to have as much fun for the same money in anything else in a turbocharged 4WD package that can be thrown about with relative ease in all weathers.

I think S2 prices have definately hit a level now, its a fact of life, people selling will always want to get as much as they can, as its a specialist car and also their pride & joy, some over value and some under value if a genuine quick sale is needed.

The trouble is, to the likes of us we appriciate what they are and what they're all about, to Joe Public who has £5k to spend they're spoilt for choice on the second hand car market. Why would they want a 15+ year old car thats a b'stard to get parts for and with a mileage well into 6 figures when they can get a modern car with air-con that works. OK, UR's are a different story, but you get my jist...

Our cars are worth every penny to us (within reason of course) but to actually value or "price" it and actually "sell" it is a tricky one in todays climate, especially with all the said alternatives. Thats said, when I advertised mine on a sunday night on Pistonheads, had the call on the monday AM and guy bought it there & then over the phone from the other side of the country.

I guess I was lucky or "valued" it about right from a buyers perspective, whether it was valued correctly is anyones guess tho...

If the S2 had hit even half RS2 classic status prices, im sure there would be a lot more smiley faces on here. Its a shame really but such is life..

I think we are all saying the same thing here... 'value' and 'price' are two entirely different things.

Who else would spend 800 quid on a 17yr old 80Q in June to then spend another 600 before its next MOT in September ?
Well maybe everyone isn't as afflicted as me - cars hit a kind of floor price when they are this old and still street legal... A bit more spend gets them more durable and fun to drive...
I'm sure I'll be out another pot of money on getting this old thing ship shape - allowing me to sweat less miles on the S2 and if money permits get some long awaited time and refurbishment on it over the winter.

Any 'normal' person would have gone out and spent 400 quid on a ~10yr old Nova with a full yrs MOT - but I just cannot bring myself to do that...

I just love the misery of owning an old Audi too much

I think the problem with the S2 is the same as when they were new. The world didnt understand the concept of a high performance luxury coupe. All the reviews used to say it was too soft and refined and not a worthy successor to the all mighty UR. I think they missed the point of the car entirely, and nothing has changed. The world still dosent understand them where as Integrale, Cosworth, Impreza and EVO are household names as rally legends. Put it this way how often do you meet car enthusiasts and have to explain to them what an S2 is?

As for current pricing, is it really all that bad. I know i got lucky and bought and rebuilt the avant for under 5k, i cant think of another car as capable i could buy for the same money. If it was a 10-15k car i wouldnt own one, i would even argue an RS2 is overpriced, is it really 10k better than an S2 Avant?

Buy them now and keep them the performance bargain that nobody knows about

Good thread and I am laughing at some of the banter lol

I've owned mine (Dests old car) for nearly a year now and the enjoyment I get from it is great, I'll admit it has its moments where I could throw my toys out of the pram but thats just a learning curve as I knew very little about the cars when I got it and slowly but surely things are starting to make sense (except for the minor problem I'll post about shortly!)

I've had several people ask me if I would sell mine, I said what I wanted which is what I paid for it but that would come with even more receipts, to my suprise they were still keen but clearly they knew nothing about the cars and with little skills owning one and paying someone to fix it everytime it goes wrong would turn it into a moneypit.

They are old cars with normally high mileage, you wouldn't give top money for most things with high mileage let alone a car that barely manages 25mpg so I can see why their not worth much in most peoples opinions, people that want one thankfully tend to look on this site which is probably the only reason they fetch the money they do as atleast there is somewhere to get technical info which without we would all be snookered.

Mark - as much as this might annoy our RS2 owning folk - I agree that they are actually overpriced... It just shows how much that damned Porsche badge is worth - it attracts the sort of buyer that inherently has a lot more wedge to spend on a premium car. Again it is supply and demand - a properly nice RS2 is hard to find cos of the sheer numbers game.

There is a type of guy who will happily spend 15k on that RS2 cos of what it is.

There are a lot less guys who will want spend 5k on lovely S2 Avant - then another 5k to make it perform and handle as well as (if not better than) the RS2. But you will never see anyone fetching 10k for a suitably modified S2 AVant in this day and age. Everybody wants to buy these unmodified / stock cars then do some upgrades themselves... Well not everybody but there is a trend there I think.

at the end of the day i think im being honest and trying not to be biased. if i wanted an evo or ur a bus then id have got one. my corrado was a much better car, better chassis etc but ultimately not pushing 500hp.

the engine and running gear are by far the best bits. they dont make it nice to drive though. if you want fun you want a better chassis

b roads a boost controlled 96 scooby not a 22b they bounce about, with a filter and system FCD and AFR will dissapear no worries and give you better feedback etc. 360hp for about a grand. BTDT. you could say its the driver- my mates got a rally licence he could outdrive me in a reliant robin. he's driven mine owned subaru and urs4 so has direct car knowledge too

back to the old point of differing opinions and all wanting different things which can only be a good thing otherwise my s2 would be one of 60,000,000 or worth 60,000,000 and i can assure you it aint (not that you dont know a piece of turd when you see one lol)

At the end of the day, the car is only worth what someone else is willing to pay for it... haven't seen the for sale thread but Dest is entitled to ask what he wants to for the car - whether he gets it is another thing entirely. The problem is the number of £2k Avant's out there - I suspect I'd struggle to get the £5k I paid for my Avant, even with all it's RS2 bits, but I wouldn't take much less unless i absolutely HAD to. And that's the problem - we can't agree to sell the cars at a minimum price coz simply, when someone HAS to sell their car they're gonna drop the price to whatever it takes to shift it.

Like fatty said supply and demand,,,
I mean i put mine up for sale and within two days decided sack it im going to chuck another few hundred horses under the bonnet and let the old girl go out in style,
Also everyone saying the better prices of an rs2 are they really when you take into account how much more they cost in the first place... think they have dropped as much as s2s. was they like 11000 pounds more,,,( canny remember correct figure)
Another good thing is the 7000 thousand pounds i brought my car for 5 odd years ago now owes me nothing., i have seen 3 people at work lose more in devaluation on there cars than i even payed for mine. anyway i just wanted to use the new smiley:corey::corey:

people can ask what they want when selling their cars- doesn't mean to say that they are going to get what they are asking for it.
These are enthusiasts cars, we love them others hate them, and they can stick to their chosen form of transport, which leaves a greater choice for the rest of us.

Notice how many cars are bought and broken(because like most performance cars they are worth more in bits), i personally dont like this, cos i would like to see the cars kept on the road- but if an owner needs certain parts to keep theirs on the road then something has to be sacrificed.

Doesnt matter what car you have the insurance companies will undervalue it- thats how they make their money- you just have to fight them.

We have all laughed at the car(whatever make) for sale at a ridiculous price, he's havin' a laugh, how much FFS! etc.. but in their mind thats what they feel its worth, right or wrong, but theres always some sucker round the corner!!!!

I had a customer who spent £15k over 2 years on his engine alone, 9 months later he sold the car for 8K!- he'd had his (very fast) fun and wanted to move on to something new. Knew he was making a loss but wasn't worried, his view was that he'd have lost easily that much if not more on a new car.

                            Enthusiast's dontcha luv 'em.

I'll get shot down for saying this BUT the money in S2's is by breaking them.

I could break mine for more than it would sell for, I guarantee it, I don't think I could do it though but if I needed it gone and no one was going to pay what I feel its worth then its going to be taken to bits, sad but money talks and if someone else won't respect what the car is worth as a whole then your not left with many other options.
