S2 values

It doesnt really matter what item is for sale, personally I think its plain rude! But its an accurate comment - you wont, for all the reasons stated above. IMO of course!
I dont think the reason for the S2 being relatively cheap, at least in my eyes, is down to people not caring enough for them. If thats the case, why dont you put yours up for £10k or whatever youd like it to sell for? Because it wont sell, youd be laughed at.
Thats exactley the same for anyone selling their s2, they are putting it up for sale for a reason and at the end of the day they want it sold.
Quite simply, i think that despite the niche market there is still to much supply (i.e S2's up for sale) for the minimal demand of people wanting to buy them.
Remind me next time you have something for sale so I can rubbish that for you too

IMHO there are several reasons for their relatively low values compared with other classics - the biggest one really is that they simply arent iconic enough (which explains why the RS2 holds its value far better for example). Also some of this is down to the volumes - there needs to be enough of them for people to be aware of them but not so many that there are common. Compare the URQ with the classic Impreza Turbo for an example of this, both are iconic rally heroes but the sheer number of Imprezas available drives the value down massively.
Also taking on an S2 is potentially expensive proposition - see sonic's post earlier so its difficult to value highly something thats likely to need alot of expensive ongoing work. And that's something that only gets harder when you consider that in the grand scheme of things the car (as great as it is) really isn't that special - to the S2 lay-person why would they spend 5k on a 15+ yr old S2 when the same money will see them in a 2.7 Bi-Turbo S4 thats 5 years younger, probably does a very similar role and is going to be alot cheaper/easier to maintain. Sure an S2 has more charm, character and sense of history to it than the S4 but that just brings us back to the fact that in all these aspects most people would say the RS2/URQ is far superior.
Personally the sheer obscurity of the S2 is its main appeal for me - were money no object I would have an utter minter in my collection and would enjoy geeking out about it. Just as many of the happy owners on here do!
As regards the insurance valuations giving bottom book for the car is what insurers do - and lets face it alot of S2s do need serious, expensive work and as such they arent worth very much. Without an agreed valuation insurance comapnies will always give you a value assuming your car is an absolute shed that can barely drive anywhere. This is true of all cars not just the S2, the ignorance of what an S2 is doesn't help you on that issue either.

You were doing so well upto that point!
An S2 is peanuts to maintain/run compared to a B5 S4

jerrrrrry! jerrrrrry! jerrrrrrry! hahahaha! well IMO! we're putting aloada money into these cars rite, then when it comes to wanting something different like i do, we cant get rid of them!!! well we can but we'd make a massive loss and its dissapointing! people are wanting them for nothing man! people who are getting cheap s2's will have to fork out anyway unless they've hit lucky, i thought i got a bargain till i had to buy parts! and it makes me laff rite when you put an s2 on here for sale, people say oooo nice car! and then reply n talk about it but are'nt even interested in it hahahaha!!!!

since you know first hand I'm sure you are right... but if you took someone who hadn't owned either and was looking to buy one I think most people would make the same assumption I did - that the newer car was going to be an easier beast to maintain.Haynes Manual:As described in Chapter 7...

Don't worry about it. More and more and more S2's are being broken and smashed up every month....
This in it's self in the long run will drastically increase the price of buying an S2 because there will be hardly any left...
I bet there must only be a couple of hundred that are actually used on the roads in the UK.Comment

so wait there, you's havent even got an S2 and you's are on the S2 forum talking about S2's when you havent even got one??????? am I a bit stupid in the head or something?

FYI an S4 cost double to triple the price of an S2 to maintain when problems occurto the S2 lay-person why would they spend 5k on a 15+ yr old S2 when the same money will see them in a 2.7 Bi-Turbo S4 thats 5 years younger, probably does a very similar role and is going to be alot cheaper/easier to maintain. engine out, engine in..................
BTW read the Practical Performance Car write up for an S2 for sale at 7k, they sum it up perfectly.
This is the true S2 problem, to make it a great car you have to mod it, simple things like brakes, exhaust and a homefry on stock engine transform the car into something a little special and is the primary reason why most are on this forum!Originally posted by PPCThe S2 verdict:
It's a league ahead of something like a Scooby in terms of quality and cool factor, and it's a crying shame that the S2 has had to live in the shadow of it's headline-grabbing big brother ( RS2 ). At £3.5-4.5k it could be a real contender as a proper 4-seat coupe, but even at the reduced price of 7k it just doesn't do enough in standard spec to make that leap to star statusComment

That's a bullsh*t quote, all new cars are more expensive to maintain as your looked into dealer servicing and in most cases they are designed to stop DIY fixes and garages.
The only difference is they generally don't pick up as many niggles as an older car which is where the money goes. A lot of little things can add up to more than one big thing and takes it's toll on an owner not prepared to be making regular tweaks here and thereComment
