I guess the next thing to try is the temp sender on the back of the head

D'oh! I'm sure that those sensors were working when removed John

Hate to say it but could be a wiring issue, those plugs at the back of the engine bay can get water in them / vibration related contact problems etc. etc., I had a problem with the crank position sensor plug, took it apart, cleaned and rebuilt it, no further problems. WD40 in there can help disperse water too.

SJM have a temperature vs. resistance graph for the sensor on the back of the head, same for the IAT sensor...

What happens if you just disconnect the knock sensors altogether? Car should go into a safer map but give boost? Worth a try - ask Paul what the HF should do in this case.

VAG Com might highlight any issues with the altitude sensor, temperature sensors etc. etc. If a reading is a load of BS then that's a good place to start.

Have you checked the altitude sensor

I can't remember is the altitude sensor needs to go to high or low resistance to indicate sea level but well worth finding out and replacing it with a resistor to do some testing. S2central or SJM will tell you.

I'm really thinking its heat related, the car goes really well till the problem occurs and it seems to take a while if you start from cold. A few weeks back when it was really hot it was happening after accellerating down the slip road onto the motorway. I've had a look at the connector for the water temp sensor and cleaned it with DeOxit. The 2 multiplugs look perfect but I've not actually cleaned them so I'll do that today. Altitude sensor is reading right in Vagcom and I'm sure if there was a problem with it I would just get a reduction in boost all the time, not 1.5 Bar for 15 mins then suddenly only 0.7Bar then 1.5 Bar again after a couple of mins gentle cruising.
I'll Vagcom the temp sensor again..

Just been out there working on the avant for 10 hours solid! I've changed the dash, carpet and front seats today, door cards and boot were already done.. Centre console needs to go back in along with the clocks and steering wheel so nearly done (where's that mashed smiley when you need it!) Was quite scary when the dash was out!
So its goodbye to the dirty old beige and wood trim interior and hello to the lovely dark blue and carbon!

I also spent quite a bit of time stripping out old alarm, stereo and immob wiring and tidying up before reassembly, it went pretty smoothly really. Got to thank Johnnybravo for the interior and Madwolf for the B pillar trims and bits he dropped off friday night
I think the only bits I'm short of are the kick trims from the driver's footwell.

                The scary bit..

                Looking better now

Stripped out wiring, must be a few kilos there

                  Hi,

Did you find out the cause of the boost / heat issue?

                  Kind regards.

I've not had it again so far since cleaning all the connectors, having said that I've not really thrashed it either but itrs had a fair amount of WOT with no reduction in boost.
