Just reviving this - it’s been 12 years!!

any updates to add? Think I’m going to have to say my 3” downpipe! Removed now for a stock one and no regrets at all! Sounds like a 5 cylinder again.

H&R springs, I thought they were dreadful, made the car crashy and prone to bump steer on all but perfect surface's despite me running Koni dampers set on close to the firmest setting. Went back to stock springs along with the Koni's and it transformed the car.

I didn't fit them but the other modification I really didn't get on with was solid alloy subframe bushes, again these are simply too hard for use on normal roads, replaced with Superflex poly items. I think this was the biggest single improvement to the handling of the car I ever made.

After a lot (and I mean a lot) of faffing about the best set up I could come up with for fast road driving on all surfaces was stock springs, Koni's, poly bushes everywhere and tracking and alignment done properly by a motorsport specialist in Bristol. Max negative camber all round, as much positive castor as achievable on the front and bang on factory toe settings.

I even went back to the factory 16" rims, partly because I like the OE 3B wheels, but again I found 17's to be too unforgiving on some of the rough (semi surfaced) roads I drive on. Tyres didn't last very long with RS2+ spec but at least I was happy with how the car drove everywhere.

Lowered springs, absolute rubbish couldn't wait to put the standard springs back on

HR springs weren’t too bad on my avant to be fair as ran stock shocks but was fed up up grounding out over speed humps. On stock sprigs and shocks now and 18s so it’s ok to be fair although I’d like to try some konis with the standard springs.

Funny really all those years of modding and now some of it going back to standard is more sought after ?

I think I the fact I drove my S2 like a loony on everything from forestry tracks to motorways had a lot to do with it.

Have to agree on the H&R springs, combined with 18" wheels they were dreadful and came off within a year.

Otherwise a few of the sets of wheels I tried looked really awful. Anthracite wheels on a black car do not work, is one lesson I learnt!
