Well I say miss fire it's fine on tick over but will not rev beyond 4K and juders along badley. Plugs, Cap, Roator and leads all good. So lets start guessing:
Coil braking down?, it is 21 years old.
Fuel pump issue?
Keep the guessing coming.

id say fuel pump.. not enough pressure. had this happen once or twice and the only other thing i ever seen do this was an injector leaking.. my 2 pence..
undo the pipe some where ( under car by the pump.) An check if it is under much pressure,, much much super spray. Remember someone had the black box the pump goes in split once also..
OK this getting worse but I'm now almost sure it's a fuel starvation issue.
I bypassed the fuel pump relay today and drained the whole tank into a jerry can all the time observing the flow, no bubbles or change in the flow occurred at all.
I'm now thinking this is a simple electrical fault in the supply to the pump as I have never heard of a fuel pump with an intermittent fault, they either work or they don't in my experience.
I'm going to change the fuel pump relay and I'm thinking of doing two things:
1. Temporarily fitting a fuel pressure gauge inside the car.
2. Temporarily running an indicator lamp from the pump terminals.
This would allow me to diagnose the pump or a loss of 12V supply agree?
Dose any body have a fuel pressure gauge I could borrow?

Coil, its easier to swap than everything on the fuel side - I know as I did it all on my mk1 before I swapped the coil.
At 21 years old it won't be doing it's best anyway

Wiring to the pump is notoriously flimsy, would be worth sticking a relay near the pump with a decent feed from the battery via a fuse and using the old wiring to switch it, did this on the ur and got another 3 volts at the pump.
Also, if you have an alarm/immob which breaks the fuel pump circuit, bypass that part of the immob and remake that circuit properly.
