indeed you are and as we are following a similar path with engine builds it would be so easy to chuck it all in and by something else....

keep with it dude you'll be glad you did once you have a play out on the twisties!!...

I like these sort of threads...it brings so many views/opinions and opens up into a mass-debate....

It's nice to have a project on the go and then some sensible daily transport... unfortunately, I usually end up with 2 projects on the go and nothing sensible to use to go to the shops I've often been tempted by an RS4 having passed on the idea of a B5 S4 some time ago and been impressed with an RS4 I went in on a track day last year. If I could only have 1 car then it would be very tempting (where the S2 would not) but for a toy, I'd prefer something a little older and less refined.

Please try to explain....I would like to hear an explanation. Seen it happen on older 2 litre Lancia turbo.

How did I miss this one?

P.S. I have spent over £10k in parts and labour, maintaining and improving my S2 over the last 7 years. I would never have that money in one lump sum though so cannot comtemplate buying anything else. However I have enjoyed the journey of owning and improving my S2 and as a result I am not sure I would ever sell it. IMO it now drives better than a new one, even with 170,000 miles on it.

I'm about to embark on a £3k+ engine build and the thought crossed my mind I could break it and spend the extra money and buy a tidy RS4 for £10k+

My philosophy is "have a plan and stick to it" but it has definitely made me reconsider agreed value on the insurance!
Yes, do you remember my pm a month or so back, I was considering stripping both S2s and getting a k04 b5 s4.

JP sums up another aspect perfectly though, a lot of these projects are drip fed over time, not just lump summed. Also you bought a few hundred pound car and are spending 10x that on it. I have spent more on my brakes than my car cost to buy. If the same maths applies then getting an rs..... Or is it so perfect it could just be driven?

Other thought for me was more modern technology, suspension for example, time has moved on.

Part of the fun is tinkering though.

Ross, I remember reading a post on Audisrs where someone got an S6 thinking it would be a no brainer compared to the cost of an RS6.
He soon discovered it was totally dull without the turbos, and no way near a substitute for one, even after taking the running costs etc into account!
If you love the raw feeling of an RS2 you'd soon be bored to tears with an NA V8

I do like the look of the RS4 and have been very tempted to get one on several occasions, but wouldn't part with the S2 now though. Had it far too long to part with it, and probably spent about 16K on it now.

non of these can be compared to each other as they are all predasesors to each other and ONLY contain characteristics of each other

obviosly the newer the car the more technology,so it will theoreticly be better car,and more to maintain

all down to choice and i bet theres a few that would/(or have )them all

Yes, some suffer from worn cams, but no one on audisrs (or Doug) seems to be able to correlate mileage to failure, unfortunatly it seems to be totally random!
I know why they fail and it is not associated to mileage. Its not associated to chain tensioners either. I deal with a lot of brands of engines and the problem is not unique to the 2.7t's. Ive seen it happen on factory cams and aftermarket ones. Infact it's nothing to do with the quality of the cams. However I've given up trying to explain to people the cause as everyone thinks they know better. So only customers that may be effected will have the appropriate head mods done and adviced accordingly.

As for replacing cam tensioners just buy the plastic sliders and replace them the tensioners rarely go wrong themselves and the sliders are less than $40 + shipping per pair from the US. Or buyba cheap £70 one from an AGU 1.8t and take the sliders of.

As for the actual topic I could've bought an RS4 for the cost of my engine and turbo. But I paid for those in drips and drabs and has allowed me to have what I want. God has a way of taking my money whenever I think I have it so the likelyhood of me ever having a lump sum of cash to the tune of 10k is next to nil and I don't buy if I don't have the cash.

Saying that once I've then bought the 10k stock car I'd have to go and spend another 20-30k to make it the way I want modifying is in my blood it just gets more expensive the newer the car is.

No shame there! I'm probably delusional but I feel like I could manage "acceptable" MPGs with a Tial'd 2.7t and 01E (with diesel 6th). I guess my CQ can feed my boost addiction.

The S6 is reasonable, again I'd be tempted to get a manual with diesel overdrive for MPGs.
