oh, and see that thing above the clutch assembly on the built motor picture above? That is a vac pump coming off the chain gears. Left foot braking on a turbo'd vac assist car? Yes please

I have a question: The engine codes that use this are BGP, BGQ, BPR, BPS and the 170hp variant with codes CBT, CBU??

Are they all use the same hardware?

small details, but for the most part yes, they are the same engines.

Are the pistons a totally different mould to the earlier I5's, valve pockets, etc.?

Hey Hank (or whoever else)... out of curiosity, when turbocharging these engines are you:

              1) Starting with an OE turbo engine (not available in USA, right?)
              2) Starting with an NA engine and reducing compression ratio (how?)
              3) Using an NA engine as-is
              ???
Be alert! America needs more lerts.

Yeah, pistons are a bit different. You could probably get away with using 9a pistons but machine work would be required. You still have your other set kicking around PAT?

Elaw, we are converting NA motors much like building a big hp out of a 7a motor works.

We are getting a dyno this month, so one of our first fun projects with it is getting busy with the tune on this blue car

I still have those pistons Hank. I hope my current build will last, but the next motor I build will definitely be the new gen I5 and if they could be used I may as well hang on to them. But I think the CR would still be too low for my liking as they have 16cc dish volume on them.

Do you know what the combustion chamber volume is on the 07k head?

What machine work would be needed on the 9a pistons for them to be used?

THe PS pump is down there, you just have to look hard.

Pat, the main difference is having a .023 headgasket vs a .064 in the 20vt MLS. This means a 9a pistons would need about 1mm less compression height compared to an 07k setup. Now your pistons were recessed into the head IIRC from our conversations, so they may be in the right place. But yes, 16cc pistons would be a pretty low compression motor. Granted, to make them work you would likely machine 1mm off the top which would effectively remove some of hte dish, but the ideal dish is around 9cc

I can do some modeling to see where your pistons would end up if you want.

Hank, the comp height on them is 29.24mm, so just a little below the 29.6 you mentioned a few posts back. I'm guessing 1mm off the pistons won't really take too much volume off them if 9cc is desirable?

But if you can let me know how they model up, that would be great

Those are 21mm wrist pins, but .6mm with a big wide dish like you have would recover a couple of CC's. I think they are more effort then they are worth when compared to a set designed for an FSI chamber.
