Yeah I am very light on the foot in the landy..... I have converted it to LPG but it still seems to cost a fortune...

I bought an oil burner last week as we seem to be permanatly on the M5 at the moment and petrol is hurting my wallet when filling the S2 with £100 of V Power each weekend.
We got a '53 A4 avant 1.9TDi Sport, absolutely love it.

A 306, like people have already said is probably your best bet for your money. I had a 1.6xs before the S2 and it was economic but a mate of mine at uni had a TD and he wiped the floor with me off the line.

if ya looking to get a 306 try and get it pre98 as the hdi version doesnt go half as well as the d turbo's, used to run one with the s2 to save on fuel costs.

306 Dturbo, or if you must stay vag a vento TDI. They are dirt cheap, no one wants them, and just like a golf underneath, perfect.

Yeah 306 is now on my list. Will look at vento's as well... I guess all the running gear and service items are common to the golf then?

yeah pretty much, although there seems to be two versions of them, the same with all mk3 golfs. I found this out the hard way when I went to put billies on my one and nothing fit. I think that the later cars are post 95 (well mine was a 96 and it had newer suspension.). Look closely and for long enough and you might even find one with the 110bhp engine! (okay, maybe not quite but better than walking). Mine even cleaned up nicely enough:

If you can find one cheap enough, how about an Audi A6 2.5TDi Avant

I had a '95 115bhp spec. and although not the quickest of motors out there, it was absolutely spot-on! Of all the cars I've owned and driven, it's definately the nicest to simply drive - lovely torquey engine, very smooth over and surface, quiet at any speed, comfortable sat at 90mph, and round town going to work and back (round trip of 8-9 miles) I'd usually average 40-45mpg which I think is fantastic for such a big car - also, very very practical with it being an Avant! Other than a pipe from the intercooler splitting slightly it never had a single problem - I'd certainly consider another...
